Guest guest
I am interested as well. I need root canal and all the dental office said that Medicaid don't cover it. They are stating that Medicaid look at it as a " DIY " health or so I has been told. They give one option and that's tooth removal service beside x-ray and examination. I heard about Aunt Martha but didn't dig deeper about the total cost. University of Chicago Dentistry School is hopeless with their waiting list. They don't pick up phone, and you would have to drive to Chicago for it. Then you have Strogger Hospital which is another possible miss, and their waiting list is difficult. The emergency room is a 10 hours long waiting period.
Guest guest
Did you try the dental school at Harper Jr College in Palatine? They have reduced rate services (I think) based on your ability to pay, and I once heard if you don't have any money, they can provide services free.  In the past I heard that if a person had a disability, they definately could be seen there. I don't know if they have a waiting list, but I think you should check it out.  There's also a dental clinic in Mundelein that helps people in need, but I don't know anything about their services. They're located on Route 45 (Lake St.) near the Dairy Queen and a bowling alley. (Sorry, I can't remember the clinic's name.) I wish you all the best-Please let me know how it turns out. kyndojo@... Thanks. ________________________________ From: Pyle Bopkas <teleprovider@...> IPADDUnite Sent: Tue, January 18, 2011 2:24:36 PM Subject: Re: Dental needs for disabled adult daughter  I am interested as well. Guest guest
Have you checked into Illinois Donated Dental Services? Take a look at this link:  http://nfdh.org/joomla_nfdh/images/stories/illinois.pdf A colleague of mine found it and has applied for one of the adults we support.  The downside is, it takes a while to get through the queue.  In this case, about a year. My 27 year old daughter is in need of having her first cavity filled and her dentist (whom I like very much and trust) feels she is best served by using anesthesia. While under anesthesia they also intend to get individual teeth x- rays to see if any other teeth are showing decay, clean the teeth and reaching areas they can't normally reach along with a special procedure called scaling and root planning. Dental procedures will be a minimum of $1600 and anesthesia will run another $3200-$4200. My daughter does have Medicaid but unfortunately neither the dentist nor the anesthesiologist takes medicaid. Does anyone know/recommend a dentist that does take medicaid and can perform these types of procedures using anesthesia? This is a lot for us to swallow right now, any help would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Shauna Wellman shauna.wellman@...
Guest guest
For transporation, your daughter is probably eligible for paratransit, which, in Chicago, is $3 a ride, INCLUDING a support worker or you. There are some limits on where it will go, though, so I am not sure Palatine would work. There used to be a dental clinic for people with disabilities at Illinois Masonic hospital in Chicago. Check hospitals locally, as they all accept Medicaid and if done in a hospital setting, the sedation might be considered a medical expense. Pam/Chicago > > > From: D. Guest guest
Joanne from this group wanted me to post this. ----Begin Email Message---- go to northwest community's website & look under mobile dental care, they provide services The dental clinic at cook county courthouse in rolling meadows provides services. contact the CDS or chicago dental society to see if they can provide names of dentists that do free or reduced work. I work at harper college dental hygiene program. Call Imazul, the secretary to learn more about services the school' s students provide.847-925-6534. It is dental hygiene care, xrays & dental exams only, no fillings, crowns, root canals etc., there are 2 levels of students. First level students work on real patients starting in their spring semester (now). 2nd level students start with easier - less complex patients in summer and continue fhrough fall & spring semesters. they graduate in may. ( remember they are still students under supervision and learning, so what you do not spend in money, you spend in time) Students do have 1-2 experiences with special needs patients as well as elderly patients. It's a good thing & if anyone decided to bring in their kid/ adult kid ---helping the student ot understand how your kid could be supported for a successful appointment would be good. They do not automatically know what to do. So the patient has to be somewhat capable of staying in the chair for longer apts. if a visual schedule that you could make would work then great. Give me a call if you want to talk further. If an adult in your family could go & try the serrvices that would be an excellent way to see if the kid could manage. College of lake county, college of dupage, and kennedy king college have dental hygien programs too. There is a new program in skokie that starts in the fall- sanford brown REGULAR PREVENTIVE CARE GOES A LONG WAY IN REDUCING PROBLEMS In genera,l from a national state & local perspecitve access to dental care for the disabled population is poor to none. Dental schools recognize they must teach students differently about special pops & give them opportunities to learn. there is a new dental school starting in downers grove, the first class starts this fall. they will not be doing clinical work until 2nd year or beyond so that may be a possiblility for the future. go to their website & look it over, you will see there is a emphasis on working to support the community. That is pretty cool I think and a good start. a dental hygiene program down state is looking to train dpecial needs patients on how to behave during an appt & what to expect. Because most dentists are not trained they look to not do care for the disabled, perhaps they are feeling unsure OR they say they need to use anesthesia, which does not have to be in most cases , is expensive too If there is a group of families that would like me to do a presentation let me know. you can avoid a lot of problems if you knwo how to properly care for your mouth. I live in mount prospect joannepriftinicholas@... I hope this helps Joanne, mom of a spectrum kid age 15 ----Email Message End---- > > Hello all, > > I have a question about dental work but I don't know how to access > this forum other than this way~sorry! Guest guest
I agree. My son uses Milestone Dental. We have gone there for 2 years. The staff is wonderful. We went there for the first time when needed 2 fillings, and I believed that there was no way they were going to get anything done without anesthesia. Because in the past over the years, we had to go to to our dentist every 3 months for appointments just to do routine exams, cleanings, and fluoride treatments. To my surprise they got all 's care including the fillings done without any anesthesia. I dont know how they do it, although I know they DO NOT RESTRAIN either. They are soooo experienced b/c ALL their clients have special needs. And my son in never afraid to go there either. He is very calm when in the office. He normally is very anxious in any other type doctors office. I can't say enough abouot how wonderful they are. AND I have never paid them anything beyond what medicaid paid them, I know I do have (terrible dental plan on my private insurance) and they did take down that inormation too, however I am almost positive they only billed Medicaid, and I think they write off the rest, or they have grant and donated money I think for the remainder owed after Medicaid. They do not do that, based on a sliding scale either. If you are qualified for Medicaid that is the only qualification you need to have the write off or do whatever they do. I hope that makes sense. Plus, if you live in the burbs and are gonna drive into the city etc and pay for parking etc, it is a very easy drive to this clinic in Rockford.
