We looked into these for a few years ago after I saw a dad and his

daughter with cerebral palsy out on them. We decided for a number of reasons

they wouldn't work for us. But, still.. So cool. http://blackbirdbikes.com/

Subject: biking...

Hi all:

Some of you may recall that Noah started riding a tricycle last summer. We

have had some amazing rides over the past year. Noah started riding at age

23 at a point that I thought it might never happen. He is SO happy out on

the trails. So...just something to think about for some late fall activity

or perhaps a holiday present to be enjoyed this coming spring...

Here is a link to a website that offers specialty bikes:

Thanks to friend Bergman, Noah got his bike from a garage sale for a

fraction of the cost of a new one.

Hi Ellen,

Thanks for the info. Quentin loves riding the trails on a tandem with his dad

and he is getting better at pedaling on a stationary bike at the fitness center.

How did you teach Noah to stop and to steer?

Francis is in Paris until November and our PSWs (who are otherwise wonderful)

aren't strong enough to ride with him so it would be good if he could learn to

ride independantly even if I or someone else have to ride alongside him.

Y'all have some nerve starting a discussing on biking when Adam and I are out on

the trails every day at this time of year.

First, Thais, I've posted my open offer to work with anyone, with the equipment

I have or whatever you have, but I don't remember if you're within our range (45

minutes for regular riding as days are short now, 1.5 hours for an occasional

weekend trip).

Second, we just did our first ride with a regular biking group. Adam stayed in

the pack (never leading, of course), and within a few minutes he seemed

comfortable judging by his usual vocal stim's. Everyone was very nice, but as

requested, didn't engage him this first time; just spoke as necessary (e.g " on

the left " ) and let him wander through the group as if he was just a familiar

member. A few seemed a little uncomfortable when Adam stood alone at breaks,

but as one such said, he had no idea what autism was and noted that I seemed to

think leaving him alone was okay -- smart fellow.

Third, as someone here has suggested, I've been letting Adam take some pictures

on the trails (he doesn't like to seem himself in the pictures I take). I still

take the most -- because he's the handsome one, and I want to get some nice

autumn scenes. (Ellen check your e-mail for the latest.)

And finally, I've done a lot of looking at modified bikes on the internet. For

CP and other significant physical limitations, I would work with the

" disabilitybikes " place in St. /Aurora even though it's expensive. For

simplier, temporary learning bikes, I've got a list of interesting options.

I'm sending the history of this to your e-mail. If you're interested, lets

chat/set something up off-line.
