Guest guest
I just bought a receipt book and gave my sons receipts for room and board paid each month. SSI accepted those receipts and increased their SSI payments. I have heard - but not confirmed - that we don't charge " rent " but rather their " fair share of our expenses " . If it is rent, then we might have to document income and our expenses incurred for tax purposes. The fair share of room and board supposedly eliminates that burden on parents. Guest guest
According to my husband: Any rental agreement will do. I never submitted an agreement to SSI. In case of an audit, the cancelled checks would be sufficient proof. Guest guest
Simple written agreement will do. They weren't strict when I was collecting SSI before I transfer myself to SSDI. Guest guest
I started charging Quentin " shared expenses " when he turned 18 but he didn't get SSI until 4 months later. They said since he didn't have income prior to SSI they wouldn't count it. This was at the Aurora office, 2 years ago. Thais
Guest guest
We are about to apply for SSI for my almost 18 yr. old son. How do we calculate how much his rent should be? tzippy58 > > I wondered if anyone has a sample rental agreement that I could use for renting a room to my adult daughter to submit to SSI. > > It was suggested that I send in a letter explaining that she owes me back rent from the 18 mos prior to when the SSI became effective. Guest guest
When i spoke to an attorney who specialized in Social Security a few years ago (when my sons turned 18), he told me that I should add up all our household utilities, mortgage and food payments, divide them up by the number of people in our household and charge each son that amount because that was the correct way to do it. This seemed unduly cumbersome and the people at the Social Security office don't really care how you arrive at the figure, so I picked a number I had been told was a fair amount. I now charge each son $400 monthly but increase it every time there is an increase in their payments. Just make sure you don't charge more than the maximum SSI payment - currently $625 - or the government says you are subsidizing them so they reduce your child's SSI accordingly.
