Guest guest
you gotta take a probiotic supplement (acidophilus) to counteract the damage the antibiotic does to your gut. or eat probiotic yoghurt, but that's hard to find in the US... also, try cold cabbage leaves on your breasts. it is said to help tremendously. hth claudia --- Ives <mives@...> wrote: > I'm sorry for the cross post, but I'm hitting y'all > up for a little help. Guest guest
well if you're taking the antibiotics, then do take the yogurt and/or acidophilus right away, so your gut doesn't get too damaged! ya see, what antibiotics do, is they damage the gut. (yes i know they " help " alleviate symptoms but that doesnt mean they get rid of them.) and even if you're just thinking about taking the abs, take the probiotics to make sure your gut doesn't get damaged. hth claudia --- Ives <mives@...> wrote: > Thanks claudia, but should I eat the yogurt and take > the acidophilus now, or > wait until the amoxy is done? > > > www.ChestnutHillCurlies.com > > > Re: Mastitis suggestions > > > > you gotta take a probiotic supplement > (acidophilus) to > > counteract the damage the antibiotic does to your > gut. > > or eat probiotic yoghurt, but that's hard to find > in > > the US... > > also, try cold cabbage leaves on your breasts. it > is > > said to help tremendously. > > hth > > claudia > > > > --- Ives <mives@...> wrote: > > > I'm sorry for the cross post, but I'm hitting > y'all > > > up for a little help. Guest guest
Sorry, , going to disagree with you here. I've had a lot to do with probiotics over the years, and it is pointless taking them concurrently with antibiotics because the abs will kill the good bacteria you are trying to replace. Probiotics should *follow* a course of abs *immediately* to replenish the good gut flora. , you may well not have had infective mastitis. From the sounds of the swelling, what you have is a severely blocked duct. You need to shift that blockage or you will just have more trouble and the abs won't help a bit. You need to find out why you have the blockage - do you have something pressing into your breast (tight bra, car seat belt, handbag strap?) do you lie on your arm at night, is your baby pressing into the breast when he/she feeds? You can get clues from whereabouts on the breast the redness is. Something has caused it - you need to know *what*. Then correct it. You're taking the abs now, but self-help measures are always worth trying for at least 24 hours, maybe 48, *before* hitting the abs. * Feed often from affected side first and vary feeding positions to ensure breast is well drained * Warmth and gentle massage of lump towards nipple (compresses, showers, baths) * You can use a wide toothed comb to move lump towards nipple, but make sure it is plastic not metal. Soap breast first to make sure there is no drag. * Use chilled cabbage leaves - Savoy are the ones that work, allegedly, not other varieties * Swing arms gently in backward rotations - like swimming backstroke. Decongests the breast and gets lymph flowing * Get plenty of rest, eat and drink to thirst * Homoeopathy if possible, but no standard remedy as always * Use an antipyretic to make you more comfortable, whether homoeopathic or herbal - or plain paracetamol or ibuprofen (not my choice!) * The flu symptoms are unpleasant but don't mean that you have an infection. Mastitis simply means *inflammation of the breast tissue* and the flu-like symptoms are caused mainly by milk leaking into breast tissue from behind the blockage and causing an immune reaction * If your baby seems reluctant to feed, express. Abs can make milk taste funny, plus if you have a blockage, you are going to have some stale milk behind it. If he/she goes on strike, express from the affected breast. The key to successful management of mastitis is to get the milk flowing and keep it flowing. Mastitis is almost *always* a management problem - you need to do your detective work to find out why you have it. If you have recently had thrush and/or cracked nipples, it *might* be infective, and if you leave mastitis untreated, infection can set in behind the blockage, but these are the only circumstances where abs are necessary. Hope you feel better soon. Guest guest
Thank you, Sue. I did spend the entire day Sat. trying to clear the blokage, if that is what it was. It was deep in the tissue and always large, not starting off like one little painful lump, I've successfully cleared those in the past. Anyway, I did the compresses, nursing on that side 3x to every one of the other, pumping after each nusrinf in differant positions (except standing on my head)massage, hot shower, no bra (actually haven't worn at all one for months). When the entire left side almost from the armpit to nipple got really swollen and started to turn red, and my temp went to 103 and I had the shakes, I didn't feel I should wait much longer. What would happen if I let it go systemic and had to be hospitalized on IV abs and couldn't be with my kids and my son had to wean that way? I couldn't take the chance. Also, last week my son was sick, had a high temp (104.5 at its peak) and was sick for 4 days. My mother thought it was possible that I could have had a break in the skin and something got introduced that way, it *is* his favorite side <g> Thanks again for the advice, I'll save the probiotics until I'm done with the course, but I'll be sure to give them to the baby, just in case. www.ChestnutHillCurlies.com Re: Mastitis suggestions > > > > > > > > > > you gotta take a probiotic supplement > > > (acidophilus) to > > > > counteract the damage the antibiotic does to your > > > gut. > > > > or eat probiotic yoghurt, but that's hard to find > > > in > > > > the US... > > > > also, try cold cabbage leaves on your breasts. it > > > is > > > > said to help tremendously. > > > > hth > > > > claudia > > > > > > > > --- Ives <mives@...> wrote: > > > > > I'm sorry for the cross post, but I'm hitting > > > y'all > > > > > up for a little help. Guest guest
Hmm, that's opposite everything else I've heard, why do you not let them feed from the affected nipple? Guest guest
hi michelle, with the fever and the aches you described, it was definitely mastitis. plugged ducts come with out the fever and aches. it is important to keep nursing off the infected side as much as possible. i think it's an old wives tale not too. it actually makes it worse because your breast will keep producing milk regardless if you are not nursing on that side which means it will become engorged which will not help matters. many times plugged ducts or infections come on after we've been doing too much. it's our body's way of telling us to slow down and take it easy. having had plugged ducts with 3 kids at home i know how hard it can be to slow down at times, but try and rest as much as you can. or at least give up the housecleaning for a few days hope all is well soon, mandi Ives wrote: > Thank you, Sue. Guest guest
I've read that the infection is in the breast tissue, not the actual milk duct and milk. I just read the LLL site, and they recommend frequent nursing on the affected side. www.ChestnutHillCurlies.com Mastitis suggestions > , > > We don't let them nurse because of the infection. Guest guest
Ouch ... sounds really painful! I tend to get a lot of plugged ducts. Hopefully it is a plugged duct and not mastitis : ). The best thing I've found (if not a little unconventional) is to nurse on hands and knees over the baby (baby will be lying on his/her back). If that doesn't work then nursing baby from sore breast and using a vibrating massager over the plugged area. I've cleared blockages that were there for two and more days in seconds with this. Also, I've heard linoleic acid can help prevent plugs... anyone else heard this?
