Dear Listers,

Anyone know what the signifigance of low Creatinine is? We did the DData post provacative challange urine test and at the bottom it says other tests, and lists the creatinine result as 20.3 the ref range is 21-76 and it states he is 2 standard deviations below the mean. I have a friend who says she thinks it could mean his Kidneys arent functioning very well. Any ideas?

Hi All,

I just received a copy of my son's renal function

test and his creatinine level is a 0.4 and the

reference range is 0.6-1.3. The report indicate that

the 0.4 was a low value but not a critical low value.

My question is what does the creatinine level tell you

and do I need be concerned? Thanks. Vicky

Vicky,

Funny Jack's was also a .4. If I remember correctly this is a good

thing. I believe the creatinine would be high if the liver was not

functioning well. I'll write back if I can find my source of

information. It may have been in Andy's book.

Hi, nne!

I had a similar result with my daughter. The nurse at the Yale Center for

Children with Special Health Care Needs told me that it meant that her kidneys

were clearing or filtering Creatinine on the slow side. She said that there

were many reasons that that could be, not just the Mercury issue. This nurse is

very experienced, top notch, and actually checked it in her reference book while

we were talking to make sure she was giving me correct information.

The issue that brought this result up was that a subsequent lab test from Quest

incorrectly reported her creatinine level, which the nurse caught right away

(they reported a level for a 24-hour collection, but the test was a spot

collection). Doctor's Data reported it correctly, which goes to show the value

of using a good lab versus an incompetent one (at least for this test). I'm

sure Quest is fine for basics, but certainly not for Mercury testing! I am in

insurance hell right now, and thus a test was ordered from Quest, their only

contracted lab. The phone calls are endless....

My son did not have his creatinine measured from urine

collection but rather from a blood test. Is one test

better than the other? Thanks. Vicky

Hi, Vicky!

Sorry I can't answer that. I only know that measuring Creatinine from urine

collection when a urine test is done is considered standard procedure to judge

how the kidneys are filtering. Perhaps someone else can answer this.

Not a medical expert here but as I understand it, urine and blood measurement

of creatinine are different. When my son's urine creatinine showed low, the

doc followed up with a blood creatinine test to determine if it was a kidney

problem or his body just being low on creatinine all together. If I recall

correctly, creatinine is a by-product of protien so if you don't process

protein well, you tend to be low.

Actually it is the BUN that tells how well hydrated a person is and

Creatinine will show how well the kidneys are functioning. If creat is

elevated it shows that the kidneys are stressed and not working

properly. If this happens electrolytes can become dangerously elevated

(like potassium) and cause heart problems. Very important to watch

creat as well as electroyltes closely while chelating.

What if your Creatinine is low, yet your Potassium and Citric Acid (MAP test)

are highly elevated?

My son's creatinine is .4, but his citric acid levels are over 2000 (range up to

600),

Potassium is 140 (range 12-40).

I'm thinking kidney problems....yet the creatinine is low -- doesn't make sense.
