Guest guest
These are research findings. Treatment has been to kill the cancer cells, not the stem cells. Like a weed, you cannot kill the leaves only, but must kill the roots which are the stem cells. They found the stem cells in leukemia. At Toronto they found the stem cells of some brain cancers. Recently, they found stem cells in prostate cancer. The stem cells regenerate the cancer cells. So, treatments to kill the cancer stem cells should prove more effective because you are getting at the ROOT of cancer, something that has not been done before. A few trials are starting. In breast cancer, they found that only the breast stem cells could grow back the cancer. Regular ca cells did not grow. They isolated the stem cells which are few in number and hard to find. At U Mich, they are startng a trial to target these stem cells. Cancer treatment has always been about the cancer cell, but this is not the real problem. Now we are finding out that there are cancer stem cells which regenerate the cancer cells. This is basic biology that was not known before about cancer. Treatments to kill the cancer stem cells is new because no one could find these cells before, and many did not think these cells existed. Now all this research is going in that direction. This is a major shift. Basics here, stem cells regenerate cells in our bodies. But some are cancer stem cells that regenerate cancer cells. If you can eliminate these bad stem cells..... Nothing will come out of the universities to cure cancer. Look for isolated pockets of clinical genius. The big names concentrate on cell lines. They do not study the human cancer tumor. They will get grants but does one actually think a cancer cure will evolve from them?
