In 1994 at age 54, he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma [MM]. He was given 6 months to live at the time of diagnosis. He decided to refuse chemotherapy. Instead, he researched alternative treatments and decided on the Gerson Therapy - drinking many freshly-made vegetable juices a day, doing daily detoxing coffee enemas, taking supplements and eating a vegetatian diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. He also practiced deep breathing to further oxygenate his body's cells, did visualization and regularly received acupuncture treatments. He lived an active life and continued working for ELEVEN YEARS after the diagnosis. He wrote a book about his life entitled, " Living Proof, A Medical Mutiny " [2002]. In July of 2005, when he died at age 65, it was not from cancer. He had developed an infection from a tooth and, even though his doctor recommended antibiotics, he refused to take them. He may have believed that his regime could overcome the bacteria. However, the infection became systemic and caused his death.
