arthritis drug causes cancer

What is it about these drugs that causes heart disease, intestional bleeding

and cancer? No one has said, that I have heard, exactly what the problem is.

The reason I ask is that I take chinese herbs for inflamation and wonder if

any of them could cause similiar problems?

Right behind the Vioxx scandal comes a report

that an arthritis drug, for a few patients,

can lead to lymphoma and other cancers.

The drug is methotrexate. Used mostly for those

with rheumatoid arthritis.

Those on the drug have almost certainly been

notified by their doctors of the study, but it

reminds us all how dangerous drugs can be.

The study appears in this month's issue of

the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The study also implicated the drug in cancers

of the lymph gland.

When patients quit taking methotrexate,

their lymphoma got better.

Hi , I would not worry about anti-inflammatory

chinese herbs creating a greater risk for cancer, like

this anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical drug does.

Although I do not know the specifics, pharmaceutical

drugs often suppress immune function, which in turn leads to the

warnings about a greater risk of infections or greater risk for

cancer when using them.

It is possible some other mechanism creates the risk for

cancer when using this particular drug. But it is almost certainly

not the case that other herbs used for inflammation carry the same

risk.

For example, the Red Reishi mushroom extract is a chinese herb

that's very effective as an anti-inflammatory and

immune-boosting anti-cancer agent.
