There are always risks. There have been children who have had allergic

reactions. That is why it is better to do this in an infusion center with

trained personnel and epinephrine available. Overall the risks are not high.

The actual risks while not zero are very small of getting such an infection

however one should be aware that there is a small risk. On the other hand it

is one of few treatments which has been helpful for autistic children with

seizures.

I first learned about it from Goldenberg, the only parent in this area

at the time who had a child who was completely cured of autism. Her son had

receivied IVIG from Dr. Gupta. Since that time I have known several children

who have been greatly improved after IVIG. I know of only four doctors who

prescribe it for autistic children, although there are probably more: Dr.

Bradstreet in Florida, Dr. El-Dahr in Louisiana, another doctor in land,

and Dr. Gupta. The first two physicians have treated their own autistic

children with IVIG with great success. I think there is a lot of hope in the

treatment but recent studies suggest it has to be given in a higher dosage

than first thought. It used to be given at 400 mg/Kg. I think it has been

learned that it has to be given in a dosage of at least 800 mg/Kg and some go

as high as 2 grams/Kg. It is very expensive. One treatment could cost several

thousand dollars so it is important to obtain insurance coverage. This may

require a letter from an expert like Dr. Gupta. We are scheduled to begin

infusions in mid-October. Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Ken,

That sounds like a good plan. I was thing about (a long way from

actually doing it!!) doing IVIG every 2 weeks at high dose - something

like 1 g/kg. That seems to be more effective at turning off

autoimmunity.

Another topic related to mercury-induced autoimmunity. Has anyone

heard of a drug called Budesonide? I understand it is a short-acting

steroid available in Canada.

over at least six months and by then we should have chelated most of

the

mercury out. Dr. Gupta agreed to let us continue chelation while doing

Sunday and

doing IVIG on Wednesday. Also, we continue to give him homeopathic

treatments

BUDESONIDE has been prescribed for my son for years (although he has not

needed any for a year) as a steroidal treatment for his lungs. He had

Broncho Pulmonary Dysplasia as an infant due to extreme prematurity, high

ventilator pressures etc which caused damage to his lungs. It was

prescribed as 'Pulmicort' nebulisation suspension 0.5mg. I guess it was an

anti-inflammatory steroidal treatment to control conditions created by

viruses and reactions to allergens etc. Acute problems were also treatedd

with 'Bricanyl' (terbutaline sulphate) which acts as a broncho-dilator.

Dear Amy,

I've never heard of the drug. We tried prednisone way back when with positive

results but could not stay on it. The dosage of IVIG Dr. Gupta recommends is

800 mg/Kg two days in a row (1,600 mg/Kg over 48 hours) then 800 mg/Kg per

month. In his experience this is enough to obtain immune regulation without

undo risk of aseptic meningitis. He does not agree with the 2 grams/Kg used

by others. He does not believe that there is any more gain on that high a

dose and that it risks complications or meningitis. Even at 800 mg/Kg, he

runs the IVIG in very slowly so that it takes 10 hours for each infusion. He

gives the IVIG in the infusion center so everything is carefully monitored.

This is the only way I would feel comfortable with this treatment. It is

going to be a long ten hours but often the IVIG makes him fall asleep.
