Guest guest
Amy, That tends to be true only with viral, but not bacterial (of which pertussis is one), infections. However, as Sheri said, you never know, because immunity is a complex thing, again mostly based on the host. For instance, when I was a child, I used to get strep throat all the time. So much, in fact, that they thought I must be a carrier, because I didn't get a fever, but always had a positive culture when I went in with a sore throat. They even decided to culture me one time when I didn't have any symptoms, and voila!, I was NOT a carrier, because I didn't have it (as I knew would be the case, given I was the one with or without the sore throat). Anyway, I have not had strep now for around 40 years......(knock on wood). Guest guest
Suzanne, One of the theories about shingles is that it is an unresolved case of the chickenpox, which raises serious questions about the likelihood of vaccinated kids later getting shingles (which is a case of the chickenpox, which never leaves the body via the rash). Re: confused about pertussis Amy and Sheri, Am I wrong I don't know but this makes sense to me. As I understand it, you get the disease, your immune system marks it and recognises it next time around so the defence is mounted from moment of entry - ie the immune system does not have to go through the battle (disease) to know this organism, it already knows it and zaps it everytime it sees it. (Actually, it is not moment of entry, it is at a specific number where it becomes threatening to the host organism. In theory then, we all carry infinite types and numbers of " germs " in our systems at any one time) Some organisms mutate or evolve so you can contract " different enough " versions eg colds and coughs, etc. Now pertussis and chickenpox etc you get only once presumably for two reasons: one because the " bug " is easy for the immune system to recognise and your immune system is alert enough to recognise it. So presumably you would only get it again if 1. the " bug " organism has evolved or 2. your immune system is otherwise occupied. OK - so the reason you get shingles is because you are severely run down, right? shingles is the same bug that causes chickenpox. It reactivates and causes shingles only if you have had chickenpox already. So why does it reactivate? Because your immune system is suppressed (eg NSAIDs or steroids), otherwise occupied (fighting a raging infection) or just not equipped (malnourished). Does this make sense to you too? Lord, I certainly hope so - Otherwise the basis for everything I do to keep my kids well has just gone out the window!
