Guest guest
Welcome Ms Vilik! Your return to simplicity reminds me of something I saw on television last night... Larry King on CNN interviewed Jack LaLane. If you don't know, Jack LaLane is a famous TV exercise coach, long since retired from television. He is now in his 80's and still looks great. Larry King asked him for the secret to getting good nutrition. To paraphrase LaLane, " It's not complicated! People make things too complicated! Just remember one thing: IF MAN MAKES IT DON'T EAT IT! " Seemed like good advice to me. In fact that is why I try to eat only meats, fruits and vegetables. I seldom even eat bread, as it requires the modern technology of agriculture. -gts Introducing myself... > > Hello new friends, > > I am a woman (the name is pronounced Velique) in my fifties. Guest guest
Hi Missy - welcome. I think you are smart to want to firm up even though you are at a weight / size you like. I sure wish I would have started at age 23! Prolly wouldn't have had to go through the ordeal I have just gone through to lose these 74 lbs! Anyhow, forget about your co-workers. Just smile politely and keep drinking your shakes. By all means, get a hand blender as suggested. It makes all the difference. Also, I like to use a bit more water than the packet calls for. And use the coldest water you can get. Regarding the intensity of your workouts, just do as the book says and you will do fine. If you really want to change the shape of your body, I would not do so much cardio (just the 20 minute solution as described in the book) until you start to see muscle building. It shouldn't take long at your low weight to see changes. Finally, it is okay to use the machines, but probably best to use free weights. If you have space/can afford it, get yourself a set of dumbells and do it at home. They are fairly cheap and make it easier to get the workout done when you can fit it into your day. Hope this helps and keep us posted. Park Introducing myself... Hi everyone! I'm new to this group and new to BFL. I wanted to introduce myself and vent a little. Sorry this is so long! My name is Missy, and I'm 23 years old. I just discovered the Body For Life book/program after surfing Amazon.com last weekend. I read the user comments on the book and it seems like a good program. I want to start following a diet program because I need the structure and BFL seems like a good program for me. My goals with the BFL program are to tone up and lower my body fat. Back in 2000, I lost a lot of weight by using Metabolife and drinking a ton of water...I don't weight myself, but I went from a size 7/8 to a size 1/2. I'm still a size 1/2, BUT I'm not a 'toned' size 2 (if that makes any sense at all!) I've got a lil' 'pooch' I need to lose, have ugly arms, and need to lose some fat on my legs. My body is certainly not bikini-ready. My body got used to the Metabolife and I never lost those last 10-15 pounds. I no longer take the pills, and I want to lose the weight the right way. I exercise regularly at the local YMCA, doing the cardio and weight training exercises. I'm at the Y 7 days/week and I *love* doing cardio. For the weight training, I rotate the upper body, lower body, and abs every three days. But, I don't think I'm doing either the cardio or weight training as intensely as I could. The real problem is my diet. I'm a terrible carb addict. I *love* cereal, fruit, and turkey subs from Subway. My entire diet for the last year or so has been bowls of cereal (Fruit Loops, Raisin Bran, and Lucky Charms have been my favs), watermelon, blueberries, strawberries, grapefruit, and the turkey subs (consisting of turkey, wheat bread, lettuce, and mustard). This diet of mine is VERY unbalanced, and it's probably keeping me from seeing any progress from the workouts. I'm hoping BFL gets me out of this eating rut! I've been slowly working into the BFL program for the last three days. I have the Myoplex Lite shakes, been trying out the cardio interval workout (man, it's tougher than I thought!!), and the weight training program. My first full day on it is tomorrow. The shakes are kind of...chalky. I don't own a blender, and that's probably why. I have the 'Chocolate Lovers' pack, and have tried the Chocolate Peanut Butter and the Chocolate Mocha shakes. I couldn't finish either of them; they fill me up really fast. I'll need to use the shakes because I doubt I can get in all of meals with food. I think it's going to be tough for me to eat all this food all day since I'm at work.... I've already gotten strange looks from the nosy people at the office. With clothes on, you wouldn't think I need to lose weight, and when some of the busybodies at work walk by my office and peer in, they feel the need to make comments on my beverage such as...'Is that a SlimFast, Missy? You shouldn't be drinking that! You don't need to lose weight!' I tell them it's a protein shake, but I don't think they understand. I think I'll need to ditch the clear bottle or I'm in for a lot of heckling from my co-workers. Why can't they mind their own business??? Okay, now that I have that out of my system, I have a question...Is it okay to use the weight machines instead of the free weights? The book doesn't show many weight machine exercises, and I ask because my gym (the Y) is pretty small and it has only one bench(!). The place is always pretty crowded, and there's no way I'd be able to get in all of the free weight exercises if I just used the dumbbells. Plus, I enjoy using the machines. One more question...I can't see myself only doing 20 min of cardio 3 days/week...Currently I do an hour of cardio 7 days per week. Like I said before, I *love* doing cardio...it's a stress reliever for me. Is it okay if I continue doing my cardio this way, as long as I do the intervals for 20 mins on the allotted days? Well, I suppose I've written enough for now. I'm very excited to start this program! Missy
Guest guest
Hi Missy. First, about your co-workers...I have had the same problem on occasion. Tell them you are trying to put on muscle. That you think you are too weak. :-) That will keep them quiet - it works everytime for me! After all, if they already are thinking to themselves you are tiny, then what can they say to an answer like that! :-) As for the weight training, you can definitely use machines. I have been weight training for 3 years pretty intensely, and alternate between free weights and machines. Just make sure to use heavy enough weights. Sounds to me like your main goal should be to add muscle - that will take care of the little bodyfat you are worried about in itself (muscle burns more calories, so by default if you eat well you will lose bodyfat) and the muscle is what makes you look toned and " bikini ready " :-) Good luck and keep posting your progress! Guest guest
I'm behind in posts, and trying to catch up. Forgive me if this has all been said before. Tell your co-workers that you are not trying to loose weight, you are trying to gain muscle, because that is exactly what you need to do right now. You have been doing the cardio thing for a long time, you have lost a lot of fat, but you probably lost a lot of muscle along with it. That is why you look in the mirror and think you still need to loose weight to be happy with your bod in a bikini. From all that I have read, I would say that yes, you need to cut back on the cardio for now. Too much cardio will retard muscle growth, and only muscle growth is going to give you the look you are going for. You know this because you've already lost a buch of weight and are not happy, right? Push hard at the weights, eat clean (and eat enough! Most former 'dieters' have trouble understanding that to build muscle you have to eat!) drink tons of water, and do your 20 minute solution three days a week. I bet in no time you start to see that you are on the way to where you want to be. Alys
Guest guest
Oh, also, and this is going to be really important to keep in mind, don't worry about what the scale tells you. Your weight is probably going to go up, but you will not get bigger. 1# of muscle takes up more space than 1# of fat, so as you replace the remainder of your fat with muscle your scale will go up. But those heavy muscle are going to make you look so toned, fit and ready for the beach you won't care what that nasty old scale says! Guest guest
Hi Roweena, So sorry you didn't post this a few days ago - we have just emigrated to Australia from the UK and are currently in Sydney with my husband's job. Our dd, 7, is completely unvaccinated and unmedicated. Sadly, we are leaving Sydney for WA next Friday (16th September) but if you would like to get together for a chat and coffee before then, I'd be happy to. If Joanna is reading, she would also be a wonderful contact for you in Sydney. Not sure if she's back from Melbourne yet though so she may not see this. Have you joined the AVN group? Might be a good place to make contact with other Sydney mums - AVN. Their website is also excellent www.avn.org.au Apologies for brevity - rather stretched for time atm. Guest guest
Hi Ava, Welcome to the group, you will find this site a wealth of information, especially when Danny begins school. I am an Australian, although I don't really understand your education/law, the help, support and knowledge from other parents is, imo of a high standard. As you have older children, you will know that Danny really isn't that much different to them as he reaches various milestones. At the moment, Trent is going through a large pile of travel brochures trying his hardest to convince me that we need to go on a tour now, not next year but now. I really love it when he is in one of his travel moods, the brochures end up all over my office - usually this happens just after I have spent all day filing and putting things away and I have loads of bench space again! All the best, and I hope the Avon selling goes well for you - many years I use to sell Tupperware - great product. Guest guest
Thanks for sharing I really enjoyed your intro Subject: introducing myself...To: RawDairy Received: Sunday, June 7, 2009, 9:05 PM hi. i'm laura and am new to the group. i live in northwest indiana - where raw dairy sales are illegal and dairy production is strictly regulated. i live near a small farm where i buy "stock" or a "share" in the farm's production. (and i feel strangely paranoid about revealing my raw milk source....)i'm not sure how much information is preferred in these introductions. but the kids are in bed, i just poured a beer and i feel like typing for a little bit. i suppose i'll just assume that if i bore you, you'll move on to a more interesting post. i was raised in the city on kraft, dean's, hamburger helper and all things factory farmed. fast, easy and disposable was where it's at. the first time i ever even saw a cow was when i drove past a farm on a family road trip around 2nd or 3rd grade and only ever saw them again under similar circumstances. i grew up never having a real understanding of where my food came from. (my grandfather did a small garden in his backyard, but all he grew were vegetables and everyone knows that's not food!)now i'm 31. i'm a wife and a mother. quite a few things have changed. my beliefs regarding politics, the environment, social responsibility and personal health have motivated me to try to live a more sustainable lifestyle. i wish i had taken on these lifestyle changes a lot sooner than i did. but supporting local businesses, eating local foods and working hard to reduce waste are all things i'm proud to have embraced - at any age. as for raw dairy - i can't believe how large of an impact switching to raw dairy is having on my... sustainability? even just the simplest act of reusing the same milk containers instead of buying new ones and sending the old off to be "recycled" is a step in the right direction. then i learned about all of the health benefits offered by raw milk. (woo-whooo!! ) i also get to support a local family farm. (a few more steps there!) and now i can make kefir (that my toddler LOVES), cheese (that everyone loves!) and use the whey for baking bread! (which i do daily) the list is long, and i have to admit i feel like a kid right now - soooo excited about this awesome thing i've discovered! and bragging about it to a group of people who are nodding their heads and saying - uh, yeah. we know. we like it, too.but i never knew. and now i do - or, i'm finding out. and i'm very excited to learn more. so, thank you for letting me join your group. i guarantee i'll be reading these posts daily. once in a while, i might have a question. but mostly, i'll be reading.thanks, and have a good night, laura All new Yahoo! Guest guest
Dear list members: I just heard about this list from someone on another LDN -HIV/AIDS group. I had just sent this intro to them and will send it to you, too. I am 67, was diagnosed with HIV/HCV in December '10, and I have just ordered MMS, which is on the way across the ocean. I started, as you will read later, the ART's offered here, 4 months ago. So I am still in the learning phase. Well, aren't we all, ha! I'll start with MMS and see what happens. I just hope that it's ok to take it with my Lamivudine/Stavudine/Efavirenz mix. Then if that doesn't seem to change anything, I'll try LDN. I'd like to explain how things work here in the Philippines, where I now live. I took the test (HIV) last fall, the local lab said they couldn't get a reading (which meant, I realized later, that indeed they got the positive result but were required to send another sample of blood to Manila.) So we did that, and indeed the result, IF we can believe it. So I went to my ear Dr. because of an ear problem and showed him the result. He immediately called the Dr. on this island, Bohol, who is assigned by the Govt. to handle all HIV/AIDS cases, so I went to her. We did a CD4 test (which is only done in Manila, and only twice a year!) and my CD4 was 250. No viral load test available in the whole country! Because the Global Fund granted money to the PH for HIV/AIDS patients I was able to squeek in under the free program here. However, they only import some of the available drugs, and probably not the most up-to-date ones. This program runs out in Dec. of 2012, partly because someone embezzled some of the funds. Aren't people wonderful? So we don't have much choice about the drugs, alas. I can't afford others now, so. I guess there are only 10 known cases on Bohol Island, which is the 5th largest island. But I got this in Manila, thanks! There is a support organization in Cebu, which is an hour and a half boat-ride away, started by a 23-yr. old poz man. Amazing what he's done, which includes going out and sensitizing doctors, nurses, etc. about AIDS. There is a lot of fear here, lack of understanding, etc. I did tell 3 Drs. and 2 of them seemed happy to send me on my way. Interesting! I suppose it's a lot like it was 30 years ago in the US when I first came out. In many ways the PH is about 50 years behind! So there we have my situation here. I do feel better after 4 mos. on the ART's, but skin itching and dryness continue to plague me. Occasional steroid cream helps, but. I'd like to get to a point where my skin isn't such an issue. Of course I can't tell if it's because of the HIV or HCV, or maybe even candida. And I can't seem to interest the Dr. in anything but the ART's. I take a slew of supplements, many she has never heard of!, many recommended by Life Extension. And I eat healthfully, too, and have most of my adult life. By the way I also have some heart issues: irregular beat, weak left ventricle. Was diagnosed 3 years ago with idiopathic (unknown causes)dilated cardio myopathy. My heart was a bit enlarged, which now is not so. I went off my heart meds in the summer of 09 and started a regimen of supplements that were supposed to do the same as the allopathic meds. It was also at that time that I noticed I was getting little skin infections from scratches incurred while gardening (in Mexico). Have been doing well since, but after being diagnosed in Dec. decided to see a heart Dr., who just recommended the same old! LOL. So I went back on lanoxin, for strengthening and regulating the beat. But that really doesn't seem like much of an issue now. Well, enough of taking your time. Obviously I don't have many people to talk to here, tho I have met several other patients, who are getting together once in a while now. My boyfriend, luckily, has dealt with it, but then he has HBV, probably since childhood. So we have our medical issues! I doubt if I'll tell my Dr. about the MMS, as she won't have the foggiest! For most of the last year I've had a lot of skin issues: rashes, itching, scaling, dryness, scalp is a mess! Otherwise I am feeling stronger after being on the ART's. Do any of you have any clue about taking MMS with my ART's? I know, you're not Dr's but you have the experience! So thanks for listening, if you got this far! I am interested in alternative therapies, as I'm not one to just follow what the establishment here says, as their experience is limited, and I'm willing to experiment a little on my own body! I did with my heart issues, so...! And I'm convinced that Big Pharma is BJ'ing everyone in FDA! Why, otherwise would the FDA be conducting the present witch hunt? Well, another issue! I look forward to learning more what you people have to say, so there you have it. I know that you don't go in for regular allopathic therapies, which is fine with me, but I just want to learn what I can and see what others are doing to help themselves be healthy! Thanks and may we all be well and happy! Rod in the Philippines
