Most people who start treatment do so after they are so sick they are hospitalized. By this time their immune system has been damaged to such a point they do not respond well to treatment. CDC Encourages Broader Use of HIV Testing The number of U.S. adults ever tested for HIV is increasing, according to an article in MMWR, yet over half have never been tested, and almost a third of all HIV diagnoses are made at late stages, when treatment is less effective. The authors recommend HIV testing for anyone who has never been tested, and repeated testing - annual or more often if warranted - for those at highest risk.
