From what i understand,since I take my probiotics religiously.  Probiotics are

the good bacteria found in our gut and the name of this good bacteria happens to

be Acidophilus.  Now Prebiotics I am not too familiar with, all I know is that

you get them from certain fruits and veggies and once in your stomach then they

turn into the good bacteria as they grow in your stomach.

Thanks Don. I appreciate you sharing with me what you know. I have heard that

before and I believe it to be true. A few of my friends take probiotics when and

if they take an antibiotic because they restore the flora of the intestine which

the antibiotic kills.

I was in the health food store the other day and found there is a whole spectrum

of probiotics. The predominant brand they had was Ultimate Flora probiotics

ranging from 15 billion to 80 billion. The list of active ingredients showed

about ten different probiotics listed alphabetically. The first one was

Acidophilus. I was hoping you might know about each of them listed. It may not

be so important. What is more important is, What are the benefits of probiotics?

Don, why do you take them so regularly. Are you on medicine that kills your

flora?

Does anyone know about the Ultimate Flora Brand? Or Does anyone know a brand

they can recommend and why is that brand better?

I just take them, you can never have enough good bacteria in your system.  If

you're on ARV's it is critical you take them because ARV's kill your good

bacteria along with the bad bacteria.  When I was on Atripla I had to see a

nutritionist and she told me the benefits and importance of probiotics taken in

conjunction with ARV's.  The reason people get all these side effects is for

that reason, because good bacteria is killed.  Now that I have been ARV free

for 3 years I still take the probiotics.  Certain foods we eat and several

preservatives in foods can also harm the good bacteria.

Don I must agree about this. The preservatives in our food are very harmful. The

thinking used to be that Some foods like cold cuts, bacon, and all processed

food has more preservatives than fresh food. That is no longer true. All of our

meat is loaded with hormones and antibiotics that help the animal grow faster

and give a higher yield. Nothing today is natural.

Does the brand of probiotics matter? Do yours have to be refrigerated?

These Ultimate Flora ones had to be refrigerated and they were pills, not

liquid. What do you think?

I prefer the liquid type and yes you have to refrigerate.

I take what ever brand really, brands don't make a difference for me.  I do my

energy reading before I buy a product.  But I probiotics are supposed to be

live cultures of good bacteria, I don't see good bacteria thriving any where

else other than in the liquid form that you refrigerated.

Yogurt (such as Activa) is a very good source of probiotics as well.  I take a

daily probiotic supplement as well.  Once I've taken my daily dose, I literally

feel healthier once a few hours have passed.

Doug, mine didn't have to be frozen.  The instructions said to just keep in a

" cool " place.  They weren't in a frigerator when I bought them, lol ... they

were just sitting on a shelf in a cool store so I figured they could sit on a

shelf in a cool cabinet in my kitchen.  They should be fine.

Thanks Don for your advice and opinions. I don't know much about these things,

but I have to learn. From what I am hearing probiotics are overwhelmingly a good

thing.

yes especially if you're on medications.  When I was on meds I had to see a

nutritionist and she told me the importance of these for everybody not just

people who are HIV+.  But any ARV or antibiotic will also kill the good

bacteria.
