Amy--

Do we need to do both? We are just beginning your protocol with DMSA and

Lipoic acid for our 8 year old son, and I was planning on doing a urine

collection once every 3 or 4 weeks. Should I now do both? I, too, want

documentation not for insurance purposes ( our insurance wouldn't begin to

cover this stuff), but to share with collegues who have been skeptical. We

are very interested in educating those we can about this and for those who

know our son, what is better proof?

What is the cost of the stool analysis?

Also, we are following your guide for supplements--what do you think of all

the talk on melatonin? Will you add it to your supplements? Thanks Robbin

I have a question about melatonin amy. I cant decide whether to use it or

not. My son has alot of trouble falling asleep, it takes a while to settle.

I think he has seizures upon falling asleep and waking, I am unsure alot of

twitching movements so I assume so. The thing is when he does fall asleep he

sleeps all night about 9 or 10 hours. The quality of his sleep I dont know

either cause he can wake up and look as if he did not sleep at all. I have

given him melatonin in the past a very small dose and he usually falls asleep

and sleeps very solidly, BUT ALWAYS wakes up after about 5 hours, and stays

up and refreshed. Now is this 5 hours of normal sleep and worth the hassle

of him waking so early, or should I leave his sleeping patterns alone or do

you know how to use the melatonin and get him to stay asleep. ANYONE??

You can get time release melatonin. It will keep him down for 8 hours or

more. Personally I use a combination of immediate release and time release

melatonin on myself. When I was really toxic I would also have the problem

of taking melatonin (up to 30 mg) and getting up 5 hours later. As soon as I

added some time release melatonin I started sleeping through the night.

Robbin,

The stool (fecal metals) test costs somewhere around $200. It is

a lot more than the urine toxic elements test. So, I plan to

keep getting both, but not very often. And, we know the course of

treatment after adding LA is going to be pretty long, so testing

every 4 to 6 months is not too unreasonable.

I had my son on 1 to 2 mg of melatonin every night for 1 1/2 years

because of big sleep problems. He was on this up until 3 months ago,

when his sleep problems went away. He was on DMSA during much of this

time. He was just as autistic on melatonin as he was before I put

him on melatonin. The structure of melatonin is not that of a good

chelator. It probably does form complexes with heavy metals, as do

a lot of things, but it cannot truly chelate mercury.

Melatonin is an excellent antioxidant, however. And without it,

my son would have been very sleep-deprived. I really like melatonin,

and would use it without hesitation if necessary.

Crystal,

I really don't know a good answer about melatonin. When we had to

use it to get Mike to sleep, it worked great. It did help him

to get to sleep. But, it did not keep him asleep longer than about

4 to 5 hours. There are some slow-release melatonins out there, but

I never tried them. I am glad he no longer needs it, but I would

use it again without hesitation if he did.
