Guest guest
Hannah,

The advice seems sound. I had annoying tracking/CP symptoms for 25 years in one knee. It certainly forced me to limit jogging and later cycling (hills inflamed knee) and in the past couple of years walking more than a couple of miles but my knee did not deteriorate much until just this past year. I wonder if taking aspirin the past year or so--never took any NSAIDS before that--and pushing the walking distance beyond my normal pain limits (to rehabilitate a bad back)--caused the rapid deterioration recently.

You probably can maintain your status for years if you do the exercises, avoid NSAIDS and don't push beyond the pain limit.

I am now attempting to reverse the CP damage with injections underneath the kneecap to stimulate mild localized inflammation and hopefully collagen growth (prolo-therapy I mentioned before). No noticeable results as yet (two weeks) but, if it works, it will take many weeks.

My doctors recommend " spinning " several miles daily on an exercise bike (with no resistance) because they claim the knee joint needs motion for nourishment--oxygen (from blood), etc.--and movement is the only way to get it.

I was too cheap to buy an exercise bike for a long time and now regret it. I can see that with a heavy flywheel (40 lbs or so), my $170 bike (Sears Pro Form 928L) can provide lots of momentum for minimal stress (as compared to regular cycling--even on level ground). I also like the mileage meter.

The doctors also emphasize (straight) leg lifts while lying on floor many reps each day.

I'm curious. What is a " physio " and what exercises were you given?

Good luck.

Tom
Guest guest
Hi Hannah

As far as I'm aware CP is a " softening " condition of the patellar cartilage like your physio said. I don't know how it's caused but apparently it's more common in young women rather than men (compare the no of females to males in this group!)

However, I'm not sure how your physio (physiotherapist/physical therapist/PT) made the diagnosis? How do you know what the cartilage wear is? Have you had MRI or arthroscopy? Did your physio do some kind of procedure to asses the cartilage wear?

My PT yanks my legs all over the place and says everything ligaments/muscles/cartilage seems OK. But I don't think this is right and I don't think she can tell how much wear there is. It feels bad to me! How does your physio tell this?

Good luck with the exercise! I think Tom (holyflower) gave some good advice about the cycling machine... apparently you have to move knee joints to get nutrients into cartilage etc... (but don't flex more than 90 degrees and use no weight and be veryyyyy careful). Personally I can't face using the cycling machine in the same gym where I busted my knees!! Grrrrr

Joe
Guest guest
He sort of made a generalisation but he made his judgement on the rather load grinding noise my knee makes when I squat and the pulling my legs left right and centre. He siad he was suprised that nothing showed up on the Xray and that if it had been from a different angle he would have expected to see the wear.

Like your PT mine said that I my ligaments, tendons and muscles seemed to be fine, but needed a little bit of work to help relieve the pain.

hannah
Guest guest
Yep, my knees make a grinding noise too and X-rays are " normal apart from minor osteo-arthritis behind the right patella " . Doesn't explain the soreness in the left knee or the ankles for that matter...! Anybody else got ankle pain?
Joe
