Guest guest
this isn't cute so much as maybe a bit sad but I liked the fact that megahn showed independant thought and action in your story. My tim did this yesterday too, different story. We're walking home from school and he says 'chrithmus, lotths of presunts me' ....'chrithmus come daddy come thee me'. well, no daddy not coming to see you daddys in Hong Kong. I was so amazed that tim associated christmas with daddy, I shouldn't be as that is often the only time he sees him and of course this year he won't. Interesting too that he has been carrying his 'security blanket' (an old puppet dog , called dog funnily enuf!) around with him every where, even wanted it at school. I have obviously fallen into the trap that others do in associating lack of speech with lack of understanding, tim understands well enough, tho for his disappointment I wish he didn't. sue wong J Emileane wrote: > I have to say that I am sooo surprised at where this thread has gone...I > shared my Meghan story because I thought it was delightful...as in I was > tickled that she did something so typical as to manipulate her environment > to get something and she even said.. Guest guest
Background to this story is that a close friend of mine attributed Meghans (age 5DS) success in kindergarten to her ability to " mimic " ..as in " of course she is not capable of independent thought.......so tonight we were at a friends house...we were getting ready to leave..Meghan had been playing, and liking an etch a sketch (alot)...she grabbed ahold of it and went up to our hostess...she said...Joan..yada, yada (words but not understandable), home???? Joan...not knowing what to say and wanting to encourage her speech said " yes " and shook her head yes...Meghan looked directly at her...put her hand on Joans shoulders, said " TANK YOU " and immediately went to the door to leave, leaving us all speechless...and ultimately hysterical.....such a deal was never so easily struck!!! And believe me she DID get to bring the toy home!!!!

Guest guest
Here's a " good " one along this " horror " vein. A supposeded friend of ours, we have known them for 8 years, asked me if I was pregnant a few months ago. I replied with a smile " yeah- I am not fat anymore " ( i kept my fat belly after BJ) she then asked me " so is THIS one going to be normal? " I just shrugged at that one.( she was being mean) And our Reverend, we were chatting after a bible study class, and he was saying how magnificent God is. He said " when dies, God will make him whole " and I said " that is right " , and he replies " he will make him like us-you knew perfect in every way " and I then replied " how do you know that God didn't mean for us to be like ? Maybe when WE go to heaven, God will make us like BJ. " He the just said " yeah-you could be right " . I thought it was funny, this man has been sooo supportive of having a DS kid in his congregation,he tries so hard to not " notice " . I think he was trying to make me feel better or something, as he didn't mean to make it nasty....isn't it weird how you know when someone is trying to be mean, and someone who isn't? It is worse when you aren't sure JB66111@... wrote: > In a message dated 12/16/01 9:16:52 PM Central Standard Time, > l.emileane@... writes: > > > Background to this story is that a close friend of mine attributed Meghans > > (age 5DS) success in kindergarten to her ability to " mimic " ..as in " of > > course she is not capable of independent thought.......so tonight we were at > > > > Oh, yes! I believe that they tried the phonetic approach until about 2nd grade with each of them at which time they went to sight reading. The older one (boy) would spend an hr. practicing his reading to his mom while she was getting dinner ready and stuff. She said, yeah he'd begin to read faster but she found out that he was memorizing the story , she came out of the laundry room once to find him reading away from an upsidedown book. LOL There are kids who can't learn to read by reading phonetically. But you know what? I learned from Dick and Jane which is sight word based and I can read just great so sight word reading is great, IMO. hehe has read the titles on her videos for years. But she doesn't read you know. (even her Dad can't figure out how she can put them away without havingto have one of us hand her the cover hehe) . Joy

Guest guest
I'm just catching the tail-end of this thread--I think you're talking about videos? Karrie will go very slowly through her stacks of Barney videos, looking for a certain one. Now is 5, can't (?) read, but she will tell me the name of the movie she's holding in her hand. She's correct, every time! Barney's Big Surprise, Barney's Night Before Christmas, etc. These videos are not in the cases, either. Totally blows me away!!! Sue mom to Kate 12 and Karrie 5 w/ds

Guest guest
I have to say that I am sooo surprised at where this thread has gone...I shared my Meghan story because I thought it was delightful...as in I was tickled that she did something so typical as to manipulate her environment to get something and she even said.. " Tank you " ...maybe I'm nuts but my friends and I felt soooooo taken by her in a GOOD way!!! As in " YEA MEGHAN!!!! " ......I told the story to her kindergarten teacher and got another good chuckle because her teacher was quick to reassure me that please and thank you were SOOOO important and that she was glad Meghan remembered to say thank you!!!! ......
