About the constant runny noses... used to be

the same way until we started him on Nutrivene-D. He

was 7 years old and now he's 12. And I know it's the

Nutrivene-D because if he's off it for a week the

runny nose starts up again. He is rarely sick anymore.

Most of us in the household get sick more often then

he does. I don't claim that Nutrivene-D does anything

more than helping him to be healthy but to me it is

worth it just for that.

I don't know if you guys are using it but this has

just been my experience.

And please nobody get mad at me. I just want to help

if my experience can. I actually don't expect anyone

on this list to be mean because you all are so

wonderful here but there are other lists that are just

darn scary...

Hey guys,

I'm surprised you haven't heard of it. It's a very

controversial thing on this other list that I'm on.

Nutrivene D is a vitamin formula specially made for

people with Down Syndrome. The theory behind it is

that the extra 21st chromosome over expresses certain

enzymes and things which cause certain vitamin and

mineral deficiencies. So the formulation is supposed

to compensate for those. You can get your child tested

to find exactly what they might be lacking in and get

the formula specially made for your child. But it is

costly and might not be very accurate. I didn't get

tested.

I think the controversy stems from the claims that

some people (and the company) make some pretty big

claims about what this can do for people with ds. All

I know is that is much much healthier with it

than without. I didn't get on it expecting a

miracle but his quality of health is definitely

better. They now have many products but all I give

is the Nutrivene powder and the enzymes. The

cost works out to be approximately $50 per month for

but it is more or less for how much you child

takes as to how much they weigh.

The company is called International Nutrition Inc.

Their website is www.Nutrivene.com

Telephone (800)899-3413

I haven't been to the website.

Hope this helps.

Hi All,

I got a note today asking me to come in tomorrow to talk to them about

Maverick's Hygiene. His nose is really running a ton. He takes clariton

daily, and also pulsitilla, and any over the counter meds I have on hand and

it still runs. Probably 80% of the year. We just deal with it. Well, he

doesn't do well blowing his nose. He actually seems to not realize that his

nose is running quite often. If he does blow it, he makes a bigger mess than

it was. So, it runs and someone has to help him blow it. After I got the

note from the teacher, the mom of one of his classmates called me. While we

were on the phone I asked her to ask her daughter if Mav got yelled at much

today. She said he did a little. I asked what it was about. She said it

was about his nose. The aide was telling him that her 3 yr old could blow

his nose so Maverick should be able to blow his. This is not the first time

that she has compared him in less than favorable terms to her son. I do not

appreciate it.

Also, I know that they want me to come in to discuss some punitive program

that they have come up with for him if he doesn't blow his nose. That's

always their first resort. The inclusion specialist and I are always turning

them around to how to deal with things in a more positive manner.

I am REALLY steamed about this whole situation. I am really feeling that the

aide is burnt out. She used to be great with him, this is her 4th yr as his

aide, but this year she seems to have no patience with him at all. In our

inclusion meetings she will tell me that he is being a brat or that he is

being lazy. I am so ready to tell her off. SO READY!

So, I need some input on what to say to them tomorrow, without blowing my

top. Any suggestions on how to get them to see how negative they are being

or any suggestions on how to get Maverick to know learn to blow his nose.

Thanks,

, that is unacceptable to use " punitive " measure to TEACH a child a

lifeskill. I would have this aide tossed. She should be made to see that

her methods humiliate, not teach Mav. Blowing a nose uses a great deal of

fine motor skills. It also requires channeling air a different way other

than through the mouth. Touch base with his speech therapist and does he

have an OT that could help out with this? Pinching a tissue is not an easy

task for some of our kids. is 14 and can wipe his nose but I dont think

he can actually " blow " air out unless I am there to explain and guide. Don't

let them PUNISH the little guy! I wonder sometimes..........

Charlyne,

When I managed the group home we had a teacher that sent kids home whenever

she could I finally ended up calling the sp. ed. director and discussing the

issue of discrimination if only sp. ed. children were sent home for runny

noses and that I was sure there were a few kids in that building that weren't

being sent home. That was the end. I wish things were as easy in your

district but I know they aren't.

Runny noses were a constant problem when we first moved here. And my kids

ran the green stuff. After we started them on the vitamins they got better.

Except of course JJ. Before the CD dx we took him to the allergist. This

dx was no allergies but it is the structure of the person with ds face.

Sinus are small, poor drainage and he was will ing to put it in writing.

The school does not even call anymore for this. But this is not because of

the doctors letter.......for a while we had a great nurse who had a under

2yo with CP. She told the staff " If I sent home every kids with a runny

nose, you would have no one to teach " After that only with a fever were

kids sent home. It was great having Nurse , she was able to educate

the other nurses about what parents of special need kids do all day--like

call doctors, therapy appts., and all the other stuff we do.

& Garry, parents of (11 ds), (10 ds), JJ (8

ds/autism/celiac), (7 ds/ADHD/Celiac), and Esther (5 ds). All adopted.
