Call your county social sevices and ask to sponser a foster child. This year we have 3 and we get no extra funding for any gifts for them. I will not skimp on them while my children are getting tons of gifts from relatives. It gets expensive. Last year we had 4 children. One was glued to the hip with Maverick. When Mav got a bike for Christmas, so did my little foster son. (Well, they were both second hand, but that didn't matter to them!). Anyway, just a suggestion. Guest guest
After taking a look around the classroom, I refuse to get another, " #1 Teacher " plaque, or Apple-shaped paperweight! Teachers get so much " junk " (sorry, don't mean to offend anyone, I given my share of junk too! :-) Anyway, this year I decided to take the boys shopping for the local Angel Tree. I am going to type up a nice letter on pretty stationery, and tell them how much they mean to me, along with the info about a child who will have presents to open, in their honor, this Christmas. I truly believe teachers don't hear " thank you " often enough, and they will appreciate the sentiment. If you really want to buy something, get them one of those inclusion t-shirts. I like the one that says, " At our school, everyone belongs. " or something like that. I can't find the website though, I think posted it originally. Guest guest
I give ornaments at Christmas every year. It makes it easy to give to teachers, therapist, secretaries, principal, etc.... I also include some holiday treat. At the end of the yer I give resturant certificates. mom to Bridget 8 ds ---------------------------------

We love it when people call and ask if they can get something for one of our kids. There is a basketball guy, name is Iverson and he plays for a team in Philly (my coworkers laughed when I said I didn't know who he is)..anyway, through connections (obviously not mine!), he sent one of our kids an autographed official NBA jersey and a nice note. His social worker said this is perfect for this kid (he really has no family) because he loves basketball and the note will boost his self esteem. We have a new elf this year, a man who was in foster care through our agency in the 60's. He is taking care of a few of our kids. , I'm sorry your community doesn't do more for your foster children. They should be eligible for Salvation Army and any other service organization that helps needy kids. We social workers sign the kids up and we don't expect the foster parents to do that. And for those who want to give throughout the year, I suggest you continue to contact social services and see if any kid has a special need that foster care money will not pay for. It could be anything from suitcases, Nike tennis shoes, school supplies, clothes, birthday party financed, etc. The kids really like getting gift certificates so they can pick out what they want. And in all fairness to all children, it's just not the kids in foster care, it's children who have an active, ongoing CPS worker (who often work with families for months before they are removed or through their hard work, preserve a family), Emergency services workers (ours have seen in increase due to the layoffs at the airport due to 9-11) and children in homeless shelters. Ok, I'll get off my child advocacy pedestal now.....

Guest guest
I want to know how much I appreciate the job you do . It can be so thankless, but I'm sure very rewarding at the same time. I love hearing about what we can do to help the system along. I want to keep my focus on helping after the holidays. I know once Christmas is over, the enthusiasm wanes and these people are even more neglected. Keep reminding us all that there is no " season " for giving to the truly needy. God bless you. One friend said there are a couple people in her church she'd like to help, otherwise we are sending checks to charities. Takes a lot less shopping and figuring out what to get. I like the foster child idea too but am not in much of a position to do that. There is so much need with so many people out of work, etc. and we don't need anything. I'm not in a position right now to have foster children, although I've thought of it often. I agree about Liam getting so much from other folks. The children theoretically are to stay with us for 30 days or less in which time they can decide if the child can go home, go to a relative, or go to long term care. However, I have had very few stay for less than 3 months. One I have now has been with us for 15 months. When I say sponsor a child, it can mean anything. You can buy an outfit or a toy or several gifts for the child. Whatever you are able or interested in doing. I have 3 in diapers. Last year 2 of my babies got diapers as gifts from their sponsers! Guest guest
How about a gift certificate to a classroom supply store? Lakeshores or Costco or one of those other large warehouse stores? This way he can purchase things for the class without having it come out of his pocket... I try to buy gift certificates or school supplies every quarter so that way the teacher has what he needs without having to pay of it. If you want to get something special just for the teacher, then I would recommend a gift certificate for dinner at a nice restaurant or movie tickets with snack bar dollars...
