HI Jodi :)

OK, my two cents lol

I have always had written communication book included in Sara's IEP, and it

has worked out for the best. Our log has enabled us to keep a support person

every year (an assistant), esy documentation etc....

The school has always put me... " parent " on the responsibility line in the

IEP, now how can I be in the IEP, without knowing what was going on? I also

used the reason of language, I have to know what Sara does to cue her for

speech and boy its been the best tool ever for that :) They cannot deny

something that will help your child succeed so I use the speech and language

reason :)

I think a couple of years ago I designed a weekly chart, little boxes for day

time activities. They put a happy or sad face in the box and gave me some

detail...short sentences of that time slot. If we need more for that box they

can write on a sticky note or separate paper. I found out this year they are

doing this chart for all of the kids receiving sped services...makes me happy

to know that my push helped other moms :)

Get it written in the IEP for a " daily log " then if they don't do it they are

not in compliance and a state complaint will be filed :) Sara's school knows

how ticky I am about this log Heehee its also written it has to be balanced

and not a gripe log :)

joined the class!! and it has little info on his days!!! AND she'll send it home

in his backpack, so that I can write in things that i want to say about how he

is feeling, etc.. I was MOST impressed! I can't believe she has the time. I

voluntered in the beginning and it's a busy place!!

I too had thought that Meghans teacher or her aide would communicate with me

ie write in the communication book the teacher bought..........

Jodi,

I know you have already asked, but maybe if you get more specific, they

will be more willing to work with you. (They may not be real clear on

what you are wanting them to write since they are sending the notes home

about therapies, etc). For (also 4w/ DS), I have asked that his

teacher write ONE SENTENCE about something did that day, every

day. For example, played with in the play house...

sat on the toilet today... played with playdough... enjoyed

singing the " slippery fish " song in group... I told them my reason for

wanting this was so that I could encourage communication with him and

bridge the gap between home and school...I was also hoping that it would

help improve his recall if I could ask him about school. isn't

really 'verbal' either, so I ask him and usually he just says " yeah " and

nods his head...even if the answer is no LOL=) So...try being specific

about the length of entry you are wanting and see if that helps. Good

How do your various schools do at communicating? I feel like I need to

be a jerk about this now, which is not something I do very well. I have

asked politely three times now..... Any input would be appreciated.

We have a school notebook but now in the sixth grade it has evolved into the

assignment book that is given out at the beginning of the year. Each period

someone writes the activity that was done. My rationale (like I need any) is

so I can effectively communicate with about what he did each day. They

are a little slow getting it started each year and don't especially like

doing it but they are great teachers so they cooperate.
