Guest guest
Hi Ona, I would like to say, congratulations on seeing thier manipulation before it actually begins. :-) Some times we who should know better don't see it until we've let it go to far. My suggestion would be to just have him sit on the toilet during the same time that the rest of the class goes, if necessary time wise perhaps he could leave a few mins earlier then the rest. bascially went at the same time as the rest, tho she was taken to a more private bathroom, and she was never forced to sit for 20 min. taken off and then forced to sit again. It sounds alot like the teacher has decided to do that potty training in a day thing....I think the staff who are pushing this should do it all day first then decide if it's appropriate torcher for a child. :-/ If he's not having alot of accidents WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? and even if he was having alot of accidents....isn't that one reason he has a TA available???? Personally from the discription of this 'program' it is something that should only be done at home if the parents decide it is the right approach. Guest guest
Sounds abusive to me. She can always change her mind and call another meeting and tell them that this is abuse. Guest guest
I call this bizzare discipline and very cruel. Someone needs to report this so the school will never do this to any child.

Guest guest
Sounds like educator brain disconnect to me. Yes, you should have him visit the potty regularly at timed intervals so you can catch him doing what he needs to do there and then reinforce strongly that he did it right, but you don't need to just leave him there all day. That's nuts. Better to observe when he seems likely to need the potty and coordinate visits with likely use to catch in the first place and to keep catching until he gets the idea. If he has to stay on it that long, he'll probably start to hate it and maybe have more accidents. The salt and water consumption is a bad idea--does he have any cardiac problems? Bet his cardiologist wouldn't go for all that unnecessary salt consumption--and what are they gonna do if he isn't interested in consuming it? She should tell them she has reconsidered and is revoking consent (in writing) to this half-baked plan until they align it with reality. And why on earth if he has no accidents at school are they even pursuing this??? Are they using it as a half-baked potato goal so they look like they're educating him in something (whether he needs it or not)? Judi Need Help ASAP...ATTEN. Guest guest
I certainly hope she is going to request a new IEP and get this changed ASAP. If I were her I would call (and follow up in writing) and tell them that she has some health concerns about the program and ask them to hold off until after she consults with her Ped. This will buy her some time. At the same time request another IEP meeting,,(which will occur within 10 days.....LOL).....and change the program at that point. Guest guest
It sounds very much like an aberration of the method described in the book Toilet Training in A Day (or something like that), which was developed over 25 years ago for special ed kids. In its day, it was considered to be a real break-through. Personally, I could never buy into it for my own children. Bev wrote:I call this bizzare discipline and very cruel.
