I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you about the money benefitting the coaches, in the case of fb booster clubs, yes they raise money to support the sport that they are supporting. FB being a contact sport requires alot more protective stuff then cheerleading (I was a cheerleader so I'm well aware of the stuff needed) In the case of my school we didn't get new uniforms every year for cheerleading, sometimes you have to reuse stuff, neither did the football teams. And if you really knew how much effort and time time coaches put into the job and how thankless it can be personally I really don't know why my dad continues to teach the work ethic needed to become a winning team to teens. :-) Joy

Hmmm maybe this is just my area, but yes the coaches do get paid from the booster club, a big gripe here because he gets a teachers salary too, with financial perks of being involved in an after school activity but I have to say that he has carried us a winning team for over hmmmmmm 25 years. And as far as cheerleading, they get new uniforms every year....two, they also compete in the nationals and the trips get pretty expensive. (a hint, we saw Dad maybe an hr a day, between teaching and the physical aspect of coaching, then he spent time doing the sit down part of his job, or Mom and Dad went for a ride so he could unwind, usually to pick up a few groceries and coffee) If you have a consistantly winning team then you are looking at a coach who still puts alot of time into the program. If you have a coach like my Dad who likes to build up a winning program and then move on to another losing one you have someone who's putting alot of time into the job to. And yes Kathy every single coach I know gets paid, above what his or her teachers salery? Most teachers I know can pretty much leave after the dismissal bell according to their contracts, and most do. (this is one reason they don't like to have IEP's after school around here, I think they have to pay them because it's not written into their contracts or is written so they get paid? no really sure) In the case of jr. high sports the coach doesn't even have to be a teacher, but they do get paid. It really isn't a hugh salery for the time it consumes. :-) hey if Dad had gotten paid by the hr we'd have been RICH!! lol It's not really a finanical perk, hmmm, and he never got paid when he drove the bus rather then the school having to pay for a bus driver to. And he did that alot. :-) I know women volleyball coaches who LOVE the job, really enjoy helping the girls develope skills, but have to quit when they have a child because the time consumed by the sport is alot. It's probably one reason we still see so many male coaches and not as many women. But even some men quit coaching when their own kids become active in sports at the jr. high/hs level. Take care. :-) Joy

Guest guest
Joy, Hi. Two things. First, teachers dont get paid to work after or before school like for meetings with parents, etc. And most of us are putting in time before, after or at home for whatever reasons. Hey I'm on both sides of that coin. I have to meet with my kids teachers after school and I have parents that have to meet with me. i almost always see amanda's teachers before or after school because how can i possibly see them during school, if im at work too? Now that I am on the middle school search, I need to visit the schools during school hours. So my principal is being decent and free -ing me up for 2 out of 3 days and the 3rd day im taking off willingly. Now about coaches, here in the big apple city, some people get paid per session, thats a per hourly rate and some are coaches out of the goodness of their hearts. all our non school sports are by volunteers only and no one gets paid. We have had major budget cuts here in the city and the first to go are the arts. Some of the high schools were losing after school sports as well, and some needed some kind of grant to keep them going. At amanda's school, the PTA is very rich and they fund many after school programs and extra curricula activities. The budget cuts and LRE, is really taking its toll on the city schools. Hey we still got kids going to school across the street from ground zero. what do you think the air quality is there???? ~ mom to amanda 11DS and jesse 7 and a 2nd grade teacher, who puts in a lot of OT for no extra $$$$

Guest guest
Joy, My principal just started being nice to me! She never lets me go anywhere when it comes to my kids. I just went to her and said, " OK i have to look at middle schools for amanda. What arrangements can you make? She said, " just make the appts and give me the dates and i'll see what I can do. " I guess going to all those meetings at night and after school is finally paying off!!!! We also went to a class a few weeks ago together on the subway. I think that was our turning point!!! Guest guest
My three older kids have all been involved with football. TJ was linebacker and the girls cheered. Having the kids stay after school kept them busy and out of trouble! I've seen TJ mature a great deal in just this season. I have to give some of the credit to his coaches (I'll take a little . Then there are the teachers who stimulate his mind. TJ is not a rowdy young man and I really don't know any of his team mates who are. They have very strict rules here...get caught drinking, even after school hours and you are off the team. The kids are taught that no matter where they go, they represent their school and team. At parents night, the boys all left their own parents and walked in a line to a father who is dying of cancer and because of his illness, could not make it onto the field. Each and every boy acknowledged this father. It was very moving. Tj will not get a scholarship for college--we never expected him to. It costs $5.00 for each of us to enter a game. Then there is the concession stand needs and weekly program purchase. Oh yea, and a very high bill from the local chiropracter for TJ's shoulder. Now, will not play football and that is ok. Maybe he can help manage a team, who knows? But I have to say that he gained so much in socialization skills, not to mention becoming known to other players and their parents by attending these events. I have pictures of him with the freshman cheerleaders, the varsity cheerleaders (hummmm...he's not bashful), the senior football players who were all sitting on a cafetaria table and just today, some pictures of him with the gymnastic team at Virginia Tech. Granted the major funding for the sports comes from booster clubs, parents, etc. the districts do kick in some money. At my daughters' high school football is #1. She pole vaults on the track team. Last year the district totally revamped the football field, including new bleachers. The track team however does not have lights and if a meet isn't completed before dark parents cirlce their cars around the track and turn on their headlights!!!! sissy > __________________________________________________
