Not a sad farewell to you lot, been here too long to drag myself away yet

tho I may be somewhat more time restricted from next week as the university

term starts. No, its a sad farewell to our two much loved rats, sausage and

chip (as in english chippie chip and not the crisps that americans called

chips!).

Sausage was always a very fat rat and has a thick brown stripe down his

back, Chip was smaller, the runt of the litter but grew bigger over time, he

has spots on his back. Over the holidays sausage got thinner and thinner

and was eventually diagnosed with a chest infection and lung tumour but the

vet gave him some steroids to reduce the symptoms and to keep him alive

until Ben and Naomi got back from Hong Kong. I have a reputation for

killing their small rodent pets while they are abroad each summer! Sausage

got better for a bit but is now very very thin and desperately poorly, and

this last two days chip has been showing symptoms of similar lung problems.

The vet took one look and said they've got to go, she can't do any more for

them so I am taking them in for a wiff of gas tomorrow. Couldn't bring

myself to do it while the kids were at school. I am not sure how tim will

take this, he is very matter of fact tonight but then he doesn't understand

dead, the other two do and are alright with it becoz the two ratties are so

poorly. So we will have a funeral tomorrow and bury them somewhere that the

dog can't dig them up again!! I just hate this aspect of pet care, I am

wishing them to die in their sleep tonight.
