Guest guest
<< I have managed to evade a number of vaccines for my PDD son but the nutritionist is recommending that we get the polio. Any guidelines for getting the best shot. Should I ask specifically if the vaccine carries thimersol? Aren't all MERCK shots ok? I don't just want to get herded into the room like cattle and branded. I want to know whats going on. >> Avoid polio. The risk of your kid getting polio from the vaccine is greater than the risk of him getting it otherwise if he is not vaccinated. Guest guest
Why is the nutritionist suggesting polio? It is almost eradicated in the US, the odds of your child being exposed are virtually zero. There is no mercury in the polio vaccine. Polio is made by Aventis Pasteur, I don't think that is Merck. Guest guest
Janice-- A friend of mine was also faced with this decision last week while trying to get her five-year-old daughter's school paperwork in order. A developmental pediatrician agreed to write her a waiver for the DPT and MMR boosters, but not polio. My friend then called her regular pediatrician here in Atlanta and she was told that the polio vaccine was not going to be given after 2002 because the disease had been eradicated. Does anyone know whether this is true? The local pediatrician wrote the girl a waiver because she said that the her polio titers were sufficient and she needed no further vaccination. Good luck! Guest guest
The only cases of polio in this country last year were from the Oral Polio vaccine which has been eliminated from the schedule as of Jan 2000. Don't know about this year. they won't stop the IPV until rates around the world plummet.
