I didnt have the AFP test with Jaykob.. I did have 2 level 3 ultra sounds and

a ton of lil ones.. none which showed any markers for ds...

And since we just found out that someone new is due in 2002.. My ob asked if

I wanted a CVS and I said no, He said that I could have an amino.. But really

why we wont abort.. I have another 10 weeks to decied on the amino.. So we

are thinking about it..

My daughter had an amnio because her husband insisted on it. So she

insisted he go with her. When they brought out the long needle, he started

for the door, passed out on the floor and had to have 15 stitches in his

chin. He is well over 6 feet and went down hard. The baby was fine. We all

had a lot of laughs out of that one. He said he woke up and people were

standing all around him and he wondered, " what are all these people doing

I had a normal AFP test with Ian (though he did have enlarged kidneys and we

had many ultrasounds with a doctor who was doing a study on diagnosing Down

syndrome through ultrasound and missed every one of Ian's).

With , I had an AFP test simply because the doctor wanted to screen

with everyone (as he had with Ian), but we refused offers of an amnio unless

the AFP came back with something. When the AFP came back high, we agreed to

an amnio only to see if there was something special we needed to do in

preparation for an as-close-to-healthy-as-possible birth: a C-section,

surgery upon delivery, etc. As you know, a high result indicates a neural

problem, not Down syndrome. In any case, the amnio came back normal, and so

did .

With Rose, we had the AFP test with the same conditions for an amnio as we

had specified with . It never got to that point.

we had the cvs testing done. not sure why but i think we justed wanted to be

prepared in case. the cvs test was done at 9 weeks and we had the results in

two or three days. our second son alex arrived and is " normal " but he is a

big pain in the but sometimes. especially at 13 and in love with his first

girl!! lord help us!

hello, I am new to your group. I have a little girl Myah with down

syndrome. She is 7 months old. I was offered the triple screen like any

normal pregnancy, but declined with the thinking if anything was wrong

abortion would not be an option anyway. I must add that I was the ripe old

age of 22, now 23. Something just told me it didn't matter. After routine

ultrasounds the doctors suspected several things including down syndrome,

cystic fibrosis, toxoplasmosis, & trisomy 18. After several trips for

ultrasounds and seeing specialists I finally at 28 weeks opted for the amnio

because I needed to know for myself if my baby would live or not. (A lot of

times trisomy 18 isn't compatible with life.) 2 weeks later I found out

that Myah had trisomy 21. I was so relieved! But I did go though the

normal grieving process also and I think that period of time is needed by

anyone in that situation. As a reply to your question when I do get

pregnant again I will opt for the testing and if it comes back anything than

normal I will know and deal with it then, and if it's OK I won't wonder at

all. I was so against the amnio for so long that I lived questioning what

was going on with my baby that I drove myself nuts. I read all there is to

know about all of the things they thought were a possibility. Talk about a

complete basketcase!! Try attending your babyshower when you don't know if

you are bringing a baby home. I just really think it is a good idea to do

testing so that you are prepared, not that you wouldn't accept your new baby

no matter what.

When pregnant with Isaac, I was 29 (my husband was 47). I did the AFP

because I had done it with earlier pregnancies and didn't see any reason not

to. It came back with a suggestion for DS so our OBGYN recommended an

amnio. We never had any intention of terminating a pregnancy, but we just

wanted peace of mind one way or the other. We are glad we did the amnio

because we used the remaining 4-5 months of our pregnancy to read up on DS

and educate our family and friends. That way, we weren't totally shocked at

delivery time and could concentrate on Isaac, rather than hearing of DS just

after giving birth and dealing with all the range of emotions, etc. that

would accompany that. Our OBGYN called us in the evening when he had the

results of the amnio. He is an incredibly KIND man and asked if my husband

was home. I told him yes and he said well that was good and he just wanted

to talk to me about the results. I thought it was very considerate that he

made sure I wasn't alone upon hearing the results. Then he went on to tell

me that the results were positive for DS and that as my doctor he needed to

let me know that there are options if I did not want the baby. I reassured

him that we definitely wanted our baby. He then continued with a wonderful

speech about how he felt that this baby would be a blessing to our lives and

that it would be difficult at times, just as with any other child, but that

he knew that God would strengthen us through this child. He also told us

that many times a child with a disability will either greatly strengthen a

marriage or greatly harm it and we needed to be aware of that up front and

be united. (Isaac has strengthened our marriage!) He also told us that we

were to be this child's advocate for life and he was very positive. He

presented the news of the DS so positively and tenderly and I really feel

that made our attitude optimistic from the start. Sorry so long!

My AFP came back negative.

Didn't want an amnio.....

Nic didn't have the DS " signs " except for the " placement of the eyes " as our Ped

(now since fired) put it.
