Anything that I personally ask for is for the kids to use. If they want to blow their noses 20x a day, then we need the tissues available for them to use. We only have that rough brown paper towel that is disgusting to use, so we do lots of activities that need to be cleaned up, need paper towel, baby wipes. Oh, and about those dry erase markers.... well my students use them on wipe off boards and they are very expensive to buy and the kids love using them. All the ones that i have bought with my own money have been used up by the kids. So and I think all the teachers out here will agree, we are only asking for things all students use in the classroom and we do already have lots of out of pocket expenses that parents are not even aware of!!!!! My children at home get a laundry list for supplies. Cost me a small fourtune in September. Many of the teachers ask that you give them packs of markers for Christmas gifts, instead of little trinkets and nick-nacks for them. I will do the same when I'm a teacher. They probably handed it out the end of the school year and one of his siblings got ahold of it. Luckily, we keep a list at work for all schools and grades (we give out school supplies)...I'll go peek at 's on Monday. 22 dry erase markers? Why isn't the school buying this? Did they not buy chalk? As far as 22, have you ever smelled those things? Maybe your teacher has an addiction...lol. I can't use dry erase markers due to the smell...it's awful. I do know that our teachers get a certain amount of money to use for materials for the year. There was some talk at one of 's IEP's about the principal having a fit over how many materials are lamenated. Can't remember who, but someone mentioned that she could not interfer with anything needed to be lamentated for things that are called for on an IEP. We live in a very wealthy county and money usually isn't an issue, except the money needed to build all the new schools. Maybe some of our parent/teachers can educate us on this topic. We need to keep in mind that each school district is different. Speaking of school supplies, I know some schools do not allow bookbags on wheels. I did buy one for (actually he saw it at Walmart and asked for it). He has fallen down due to carrying a heavy bag before..I'll just have it rewritten in his IEP should anyone question that. She uses her own money to decorate her room with awesome bulletin boards (I helped her one year) Right now she teaches in an inner city school, parents cant afford school supplies for their children, so her old school from my area donated all of the last year supplies for her. The ones the kids toss in the can at the end of the year. She also traveled miles to pick up Nickelodeon stuff that a warehouse was going to toss away Heehee she donated enough supplies for all of Sara's classes too, lol cant hurt to make Sara more attractive (bringing in Nic goodies lol) I do know that Sped teachers are the only ones here who don't send a supply list home. Teachers maybe prefer dry erase to sqealing chalk? :-) Here they don't start asking for dry erase markers until the kids are in like 4th or 5th grade...so the probably don't have kids going to the board as much in the lower grades. once they move to the HS in 7th they are no longer asked to bring them. teachers get a descretionary fund which they are to use to buy classroom supplies. I think kristi said last year she got 150 (something like that) for the school year, since she was a new teacher that money also had to be used for classroom/bulletin board supplies to, My guess is that in the HS here it's not necessary to buy the pencils pens etc etc that elem. teachers end up having to supply at times. HS age kids should be able to be much more responsible then elem. kids. Course in HS there's always the kid who never brings his own pencil/pen because he can always find some gal to loan him one. LOL Umm, if you are in some store like walmart and should happen to find a really good buy on school supplies when they're clearaning the stuff out most teachers would love to have you donate the stuff. (right ???) Kristi says that she always needs pencils, erasers, and glue sticks since the kids always run out, lose them or sharpen the pencils til their only a couple of inches long....quite exasperating at times. :-) I gave her the glue sticks and erasers that I picked up last Oct or Nov. she asked me why i didn't buy all the glue stick, erasers and pencils that were there. she especially wanted the pencil erasers. LOL And gave me orders that I had better clear out the shelf if I find such a good buy again. hehe. i think in the first three grades here if i'm remembering right the teachers here send home a classroom note about halfway through the year telling parents to ask their child what they need for school supplies since so many kids forget. hehe. I don't know about other parents but any time my child had a runny nose and goes to school, I make very sure that he has a supply of tissues with him. Ones that I like him to use since I agree with that when my child needs to continuously wipe his nose I want him to have something soft not something cheap that someone bought because they were told to send in 4 boxes. I occasionally send in stickers or dry erase markers throughout the year. Or a booklet of stamps ... sort of like I don't wait for Mothers Day to let her know she is valued, I like to do nice things when the moods strikes me. Same with a teacher... And that is a really nice idea about buying stuff on sale when one sees them. We are alloted $200 per year to spend, but as I said before, we get very little in basic supplies. Some of that money goes towards that. And as kathy mentioned, to decorate a classroom is also expensive. And some teachers really like to buy BOOKS with their stipend!!!!!! And since I am Walmart deprived, and I cant spend my $$$$ till Aug 1, whenever I am somewhere on vaca I stock up at Walmart on all kinds of things escpecially glue sticks and markers My kids school also asks for extra stuff to be donated for other kids who may not be able to afford it. And since I work in an inner city school, I only ask the families to send what the kids really need and I usually offer an option - like one roll of paper towels or one box of tissues. Or one box of colored pencils or one box of markers. The notebooks and folders are the most important for us to have here!!!!
