Guest guest
Hi all: Recently someone asked me a question about the portability of Medicaid when traveling in the United States... I thought you all might benefit from reading Sherri Schneider's informative (and funny) response... Ellen " We go to California 2 X year. Before we go, I call to find a hospital that accepts IL Medicaid. (Most teaching hospitals or larger institutions accept many out of states' Medicaid.). Also, one time, my son went by ambulance to a hospital. The bill was HUGE. We worked with the hospital to become an Illinois Medicaid provider and they billed IL Medicaid. It helped to suggest that they do this to get paid or get nothing for the bill since he was over 18 and we were not legally responsible for the bill and never signed anything for this hospital stay. One year, we went to Barbados and my daughter hit her head on a door angle and needed stitches. We took a " cab " to a dr's office. There were pigs & chickens in the waiting room. We met the dr. He had a University of Michigan diploma on the wall. We asked him: Do you take Blue Cross? and he laughed. So - we learned that commercial insurance is not always portable too.........
