Guest guest
I'm struggling a bit with something and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts with me. The ARC of Illinois continues to encourage me (via email) to advocate on a position I don’t agree with. I am a member of the Arc of IL and have no intention to stop. I have made my appointments with my legislators but I am not going to tell them (both Republicans) to “do the right thing and pass a tax increase†because I don’t believe that right now, passing a tax increase is the right thing to do. I know I can hit the delete key. However, I want to reconcile our significant difference of opinion. I wish the ARC of IL would give me (a tax paying, law abiding citizen who does not want to see a tax increase) talking points, too. There must be talking points for those of us who do not want a tax increase. Am I wrong to expect the ARC of IL to recognize that not all of the membership agrees with their position on this point? Does the ARC of IL have a partisan bias? Is there room within the membership for disability advocates who feel we are taxed enough already? Pam Arc Update The Arc of Illinois March 29, 2010 Leaders in The Arc: I need you to make your appointments with your legislators now that they are on Spring Break. We need them to do the right thing and pass a tax increase before they adjourn on May 7th. Right now without a tax increase we will see 30,000 lose their grant funded services and rate cuts of 2.5%! Act now! Tomorrow Rep Will Burns will be honored for opposing cuts to human services. Attend the Town Hall Forum if you can. See details below. The Responsible Budget Coalition is sponsoring a rally in the Capitol for April 21st. We are expecting 10,000 people! Be there! April 22nd, the House Appropriations Human Services Committee may hear testimony from community advocates on the Dept. of Human Services budget. The committee begins at 8:00 a.m., Room 114 in the Capitol. Tony auski The Arc of Illinois 815-464-1832 SPREAD THE WORD! WHAT: Town Hall Forum offering constituents from the 26th District an opportunity to thank State Representative Will Burns for opposing cuts to education, senior and childcare programs, public safety and local government services. WHEN: 5:30p.m. Tuesday, March 30th WHERE: Bright Star Church of God in Christ, 735 East 44th Street, Chicago, IL WHY: The Town Hall Forum will allow local members of the Responsible Budget Coalition to thank Burns for being a progressive champion in Springfield. Guest guest
Pam I am with you on NOT wanting a tax increase. I dont feel that is the answer, I feel its just giving them more money to abuse and it wont get us any more benefits, their record proves it. That is why it is a free country for everyone to have his/her own opinion. Bravo!! Dont beat yourself up over it, follow your heart! Guest guest
certainly we all want more services for our loved ones...but an income tax increase of 67% will not significantly change the state's budget woes. What will happen is the government will grow yet services to our population will again get the smallest piece of the pie and then we will still be in a deficit situation. By now most of us have paid our taxes...look at Line 15 of your IL 1040...now increase that number by 67%. Mine goes up by over $1600. Do you think that my family will receive an additional $1600 worth of benefits? Now add to that increases we are going to see in health insurance premiums, and increases from the Bush tax cuts ending and there you can get a good picture of how much money is being sucked out of your pocket. Not to mention if like me (until this week) you are underemployed, have missed out on year end bonuses and raises the last 2 years! Kennedy and Reagan had it right...lowering taxes will actually increase revenue by spurring economic growth. Raising taxes will lead to higher unemployment (unless you are a government worker) and thus less income for Springfield and D.C. And feel free to join me downtown on April 15th! Guest guest
Pam & Kathy, I've gotta get on your band wagon, also. I don't know that a tax increase would do any good & Isure don't want to see any more of our money being abused. I have written to legislators, but haven't met with them personally, except for one years ago. By the time I get off work, everybody is gone & I'm at work before the sun comes up. For the last few months have had enough to deal with at " the facility " . Liz

Guest guest
I am with you Pam! There is no way I want a tax increase! I have seen what Illinois has done with " extra " money in the past. It has NOT helped people with disabilities and many other areas I think it should have been spent. Just passing a tax increase will still not guarantee our children even 1 penny. It will just give them more money to not have to borrow.
