Guest guest
Dear Concerned parents about Health Care, Lets give the goverment the benefit of the doubt. After all we get social security from the goverment, as well as medicare and medicaid. The National INsititute of Health funds basic research and finds cures for diseases, the USDepartment of Agriculture safeguards our food safety, and the FDA tests drugs before they are put on the market. None of these programs are perfect, but nothing that is human related is, none of us are perfect. The first plan for nation health reform was started 100 years ago by a republican Teddy Roosevelt, and we are the only wealthy country where people do not get health care. Actually people do go to emergency rooms, but can't get basic care from a family doctor. That is one reason why are heath care costs are rising. Juli Cicarelli From: ktbugg <kathyb54@...> Subject: Re: Fw: Arc Action Alert Call Today on Health Care Reform IPADDUnite Date: Friday, March 19, 2010, 7:56 PM  You know what, the health care bill plan the administration is trying to shove down our throats will not be like a trip to Oz. Guest guest
I would much prefer that our entire country operated as a competitive, free market economy. My husband's Libertarian values have worn off on me over the years. But that will still create a large gap between the haves and the have nots. Juli makes a good point about some of the accomplishments of our federal government. At the very least, our federal government attempts to level the playing field vis a vis a multitude of entitlements and social services that don't exist many other places in the world and that do help our own family members who happen to have disabilities. The national health care plan, while no doubt flawed, will hopefully help some folks who would otherwise have no access to health care. Sure I would love to see us start over and do it " better " , and yes, separating out long term health care needs from the day to day needs makes sense, but when you get two political parties, lots of strong emotions, power plays, experts with varying opinions, it will never be a smooth path or a perfect process... Guest guest
I suppose I would be willing to discuss a position paper...regardless if this bill passes or not.But for those in favor of it please remember that this is not a panacea of a bill...it doesn't cover everyone, costs will continue to rise, health insurance companies will make more money since 30-50 million people will be forced to buy insurance, doctors and facility reimbursement rates will be cut (and we know how many facilities are already hanging by a thread), pharmaceutical companies will also make larger profits with 30 million more people taking their drugs, and the list can go on and on! This bill is a monstrosity as so much in it doesn't even apply to health care or gives special deals as you are well aware. This is the first step in the process, but just think down the road a bit...you get on a government insurance plan so how long do you think it will be before vaccines are mandated to stay on it? How will they look at a child on a special diet that has not been double-blind studied? Will the feds prefer you to house your child in a large institution with dozens of SEIU workers or will they allow you to choose a local CILA? This bill (if passed) is a stepping stone to so many things that we can't even foresee! KILL THE BILL and get back to what is needed...affordable insurance for those who cannot afford it, separation of insurance through the employer, portability, realistic Tort reform, ability to purchase across state lines, etc... Most of us think we could have crafted a better national health care bill, and perhaps we could have. Perhaps much of the tweaking of this bill will address some of these very troubling issues. This illustrates the importance of staying on top of things, keeping well informed and communicating with our national and state leaders, en masse in large, grassroots initiatives at the beginning and middle of the planning processes for large government initiatives. Most of the time we sit and wait to see what the leadership will do instead of being proactive. I know this is difficult, as we all have busy and often stressful lives. But representative government dictates and in fact demands participation, without which we have no alternative but to accept what the leaders say is in our country's best interest and without which we have no right to complain when we do not like the results. Keep in mind, I am only marginally and reluctantly in favor of the national health care plan, as proposed, and I would hope that we could perhaps craft our concerns into a position paper that we could share with our leaders in Washington. Pam, , Gordon...would some of you be willing to work on that together? Are there other strategies that we could employ? Meetings with our U.S. Reps and Senators around the state? The Health care bill will add 1,000,000 new people into Medicaid. Guest guest
Yes, there is $48 Billion more dollars for Medicaid. There will also be more than 1,000,000 new Medicaid recipients. Medicaid is the government's health insurance for the poor and disabled. The Health care bill will add 1,000,000 new people into Medicaid. The question remains - can the already plagued Medicaid system, even with an influx of $48 billion be able to meet the medical needs of all these people? Will more doctors participate? Will waiting times be shortened? And it's important to know there are proposed cuts to Medicare. This is the government's health insurance for elderly. $523.5 Billion in cuts. http://docs.house.gov/rules/hr4872/111_hr4872_amndsub.pdf It's only 150 pages long but it's nearly impossible to read with comprehension. Guest guest
So if there will be $48 billion more dollars for Medicaid, and 1 billion additional Medicaid recipients... ....then possibly those 1 billion new folks get $48 worth of health care per year, and those already on Medicaid get no additional funds...if they are all lucky. What do they need to be lucky? Enough docs willing to see Medicaid patients, and no other places to spend the Medicaid money, such as additional government bureaucrats to administer the program to all those extra people. The more people served, the more government staff hired to run the paperwork, and they don't work for free. -Gail From: ktbugg <kathyb54hotmail (DOT) com> Subject: Re: Fw: Arc Action Alert Call Today on Health Care Reform IPADDUnite@gro ups.com Date: Friday, March 19, 2010, 7:56 PM You know what, the health care bill plan the administration is trying to shove down our throats will not be like a trip to Oz. Eventually the rich will find ways around the system, the poor will be forced to wait in line for less care at a higher cost by underqualified medical personnel... Guest guest
All good points, Pam. The cost is enormous and the benefits unknown. Guest guest
Ellen - If , Gordon and I worked collaboratively on a position paper - it would not be in favor. I could not contribute without showing my bias. My concerns. My fears. At the heart of my disdain for the bill is the mandate. I know personally, the privacy that we have given up so our son Josh can receive Medicaid and apply for IL Home based support services program. When he was enrolled in the IL HBSSP, I was again made very uncomfortable with the privacy we had to give up. We made the choice. Keep Josh on the waiver - give up the privacy. There will be no choice. Health insurance will be mandatory. If I do not obey, I will be taxed. By the IRS. I question whether or not this tramples on my constitutional rights. I don't think a tax can be used punitively (as punishment) but I digress. How can we cut Medicare by 500 million dollars? Will our elderly be folded into a different new government plan? With new rules and regs? Will the new rules and regs benefit our elderly or the bottom line? Guest guest
Pam and : I think it is important to create a forum for dialogue...I think most of us are very concerned with certain aspects of the health care bill, but most of us would agree that the sky rocketing cost of health insurance, medical care, drugs, all necessitate some action by the government or maybe some other group. What would that action be, what would it look like in a perfect world? What I was proposing is that you could start a position paper that we could then post on IPADDU for a couple of weeks for " public comment " ...then you could go back and modify the position paper, if there are further comments that help to strengthen your position. If we get backlash from IPADDU members that strongly suggests that you do not represent their opinion, we can rethink how to use the position paper...You may wish to use it personally in meetings with our federal legislators. It will get us all thinking about universal health care, and what it really means to us and our loved ones who have disabilities. Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Guest guest
Margie...no it is not your fault at all. One of the changes to health care should be portability...such that you are responsible for your own coverage and not your employer. Why not have employers give a stipend or government give a tax credit so a family can purchase its own health insurance so that when someone loses a job and gets a new one they can keep their insurance on the plan they choose and not whatever the new employer chooses to give them? Why if you are sick and can't work does your insurance have to lapse? It wouldn't if insurance was not employer-based... As for COBRA, why should it ever run out as it seems a COBRA payment is more than a regular monthly premium??? Why should gov't limit the time on COBRA??? In a message dated 3/21/2010 10:27:05 A.M.
