Makes sense.  It is just their share as an adult.  If they lived away from the

home they would have to pay their share.  They should be paying 1/2- 1/3 or

what ever depending how many people live in the home and this should be for all

bills, right?

well if were required to pay 1/2 he'd need a lot more than $674.00(this is

not even what 1/2 of my monthly rent is) in our case which means I am helping to

support him which means he's not entitled to the full amount anyway as I

understand it.....even though " I " think he should get all of it.

Thanks for this, makes sense to me, time to start calculating :-)

Have a good day!

Re: Re: SSI

When I calculated my sons share of expenses I used a sliding scal e method so I

alculated my income and his and what percentage his income was of the total and

ultiplied the expenses for rent, utilities and food by that amount. In other

ords my sons income was 16% of the total. I had $2200 for rent , utilities and

ood so his share was $352.00. I could support this amount and felt this was a

air share.

I still provided more that 50% of his care however he was able to feel good

bout making a contribution to the household.

You may not want to put 1/3 of expenses - if the amount is too much - they will

tell you he would never be able to pay his 1/3 and cut you back. The safest way

is to say he pays rent - I think it is $300/month now - someone correct this is

I am wrong.

Thanks for all the sharing

I never have been able to get any understanding of how SSI works other than it

really depends on the diagnosis (aka there does exist a fast track list of

about 40)

and the office and the person you get who takes care of you at intake.

aying rent to get the full amount? The woman at SS said she would call me when

he approval went through to set up a bank account, I guess I'm not getting that

all or well this check is just dated 6/14/10. I'm sure she can answer all of my

uestions on how to get the direct deposit set up, etc.

So, I guess we are approved 5 weeks after applying! I guess I'm excited??

And I'm not quite sure how to " prove " 's expenses warrant him to receive the

$674 that's the part I'm having a hard time figuring out.

H.

Re: Re: SSI

If his expenses are more than his income (SSI + any earnings), then he is

etting " help " . Help is valued at 1/3. If expenses are more then income, you

ose 1/3 so the SSI payment will be $449.34 instead of $674.

Go figure..... I would think that you would need more income, not less........

, prior to applying for SSI, I listed what Angel's expenses were for:

SEASPAR (special recreation)

We Grow Dreams (work training)

Transportation to programs and medical

Out of pocket medical

Pull up supplies

clothing

recreation, etc.

I had everything all ready and documented and the intake coordinator didn't even

ask for them!

I will make another appointment to go in there and document things better, the

question I answered wrong was " does he pay rent? " I should have lied and said

" yes! " LOL That's what it's about otherwise there is no question he should get

the full amount. As I said, when your kid is 18 and gets a check for $20 every

two weeks from his work training it's hard to say " yes, he pays rent! "

Quite honestly it's all a bunch of bureaucratic BS.

Hi all:

I have saved several " SSI " related pieces from previous postings. Thanks to

Sherri Schneider for providing this information...

Though these are from last year, the information is still accurate and relevant.

I need advice on how to get the most SSI for my son...my phone interview is in 2

weeks and I need to know the right wordage. I understand there is a possibility

they will say " your son is entitled to $675.00 but we are only going to give you

2/3 plus $20 for $470. " Why do they do this and is there a way to show my sons

needs.

Does anyone else get SSI and SSDI for your child?  I get both for my son as his

father died in 1987 and he gets 2 checks each month, one under his SS number and

one under his father's SS number.  I have never been asked to open a separate

account and I only have to report each year how much was used for room and

board, food, clothing, etc.  I am his payee.  My son also works about 12 hours

a week and earns under the allowable amount so he can get HBWD along with his

Medicare A, B and D.  We only have to contact them if he goes over the

allowable amount from his job which has been 2 or 3 times in the past 6 years.

They do contact us every few years and ask us to update our information.  We

also receive Home Based Services, which I think we were lucky enough to get as

his step father is also disabled and I retired 4 years ago to be the full time

care taker of my son who has Down Syndrome and help my husband as well.  I

think we have been REALLY

lucky to have all these services with very little trouble.  I hear all the

trouble most of you have gone through and I feel guilty sometimes as it has been

easy for us so far in getting funds but are holding our breath for the day it is

cut.

Adam, 23 years old has Down Syndrome. He gets SSI and as of 21 he started

getting SSDI on his work record. He also qualifies for Medicaid and

Medicare, again on his work record. We do have a separate sacred account

that has just the SSI/SSDI money. Any thing he earns from work is spent on

his activities. He works only about9-10 hours a week so he is not bringing

in great amounts of money. He has worked hard to earn the necessary credits

for SsDi/Medicare because I knew that would afford him greater earning

potential as well as better medical coverage. With claiming IRWE and keeping

track of his expenses it is a lot of paperwork my husband gets to do.

And yes, I thank God every day Adam has the benefits including Home Based

Support.

I'm just glad we are officially in the system, I'll start logging expenses to

get the full amount, at least now I can say " yes I'm charging him room and

board!! " His teen camp this summer will cost more than he's getting currently

each month.

This is my first experience with getting any government funds or for that matter

insurance funds to help pay for anything receives. Back in the day my

health insurance wouldn't pay for any therapies he was receiving. It does seem

funny to me to be excited about this but I am, if nothing else it's one more

thing done for his future.

IRWE, Impaired Related Work Expense.

I find it pretty complicated, however in a very tiny nutshell it is the

expenses that a person with a disability spends because of the disability

that is very work related.

.. Adam, really his dad and I keep track of things like ride Dupage that he

uses to get to work.

If Adam did not have a disability he would not need para transit.

My service dog expenses are all IRWE.There is an equation SSA uses that

allows those IRWE to be deducted from the amount earned at a job. Those

expenses allow the person with a disability more in SSI. It means keeping

close track of those expenses and sending them to SSA when you send in the

work receipts .

This is a very general explanation.

The way I am understanding it nowthe IRWE has to be approved.

Adam qualifies for free Medicaid under 1619-B because he doesn't earn enough

at his job that would require him to have to pay for HBWD.

My son really doesn't have any job related expenses except we take him to

and from work and I just add that into the HBS hours.  They told me I did not

have to send in his check stubs unless he goes over the allowable amount any any

month.  pays $81.00 a month for HBWD which he could not ever get to his

spend down that Medicaid gave him so at least he has a Medicaid program if and

when he needs it.

I had to take up to the SSA office about a week ago, to get a change of

adress for him when he moved home.

The guy we dealt with was pretty nice. He asked me how much was going to

pay for rent & then reminded me that he had paid $250 when he lived at home

before. I was going to keep it at $250, he said " but that was a couple years

ago " ; so now will be paying $300.

It was less painless than the wait at the DMV.

& I had a joint acct before he turned 18. We still have that acct, but now

on his checking acct. bank statement it says his name first, then my name & rep

payee.
