Guest guest
They said to open a checking account with 's name as a primary and me as the payee. They also said it would be ok with them if it had s name first and mine as a co signature. Our credit union requires a savings account along with the checking acct. Guest guest
If you are the payee, that means that Social Security has determined that your adult child cannot handle their own funds. The checking account should be titled: your name, as representative payee for your child's name. It should be opened under HIS Social Security number and YOU should be the ONLY signer. If Social Security sees that he is signing, it could spur a medical redetermination because he is now able to handle money. ________________________________ From: " sunshinebeaches3@... Guest guest
How funds should be held It is a good idea to ask us to directly deposit monthly benefits into a bank account. We recommend that you hold benefits in a checking or savings account to protect against loss or theft. Also, do not mix the beneficiary’s funds with your own or other funds. If any money is left after meeting the beneficiary’s day-to-day and personal needs, it must be saved. The preferred ways of saving is U.S. Savings Bonds or an interest-paying bank account that is insured under either federal or state law. Interest earned belongs to the beneficiary. To protect the beneficiary’s funds, the checking or savings accounts title must reflect the beneficiary’s ownership of the funds and your relationship as a fiduciary (financial agent). Neither the representative payee nor any other third party can have ownership interest in the account. The beneficiary must never have direct access to the account. Any account title (under state law) that shows beneficiary ownership of the account with you as fiduciary is acceptable. Do not use joint accounts. Here are two ways we recommend to title the accounts: “(Beneficiary’s name) by (your name), representative payee.†“(Your name), representative payee for (beneficiary’s name).†Your bank will provide help if you have additional questions. An exception for parents who are representative payees A common checking account for all family members living in the same household who receive benefits may show a parent as the owner of the account. Children’s savings, however, must be held in a separate savings account for each child, with the child’s name shown as the owner of the account. Keeping records As a representative payee, you are responsible for keeping records and reporting on how you spend the benefits by completing a Representative Payee Report (Form SSA-623, SSA-6230 or SSA-6233). The appropriate form will be mailed to you about once a year. You also can file the report online at www.socialsecurity.gov/payee. You must complete the report even if you are the beneficiary’s legal guardian. You may choose to use the worksheet in the center of this booklet to help you keep track of the money you spend. When you need to fill out the Representative Payee Report, you can add the amounts in each column of your worksheet and put the totals on the accounting form. If you need additional worksheets, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778 ) . Guest guest
All of the information I post is from either: - a technical expert at a Social Security office - Social Security's Procedure Operating Manual - a District Manager at a Social Security office I had to resort to the top as I would always get different answers each time I spoke with someone from Social Security. This was so frustrating to me that I now have relationships with people who can show me where answers actually come from so I believe these sources to be reliable. Also, from working in the " trenches " for over 30 years, I have seen many things and I always suggest the path of least resistance. Hope this helps. ________________________________ From: Marcia Smetanko <m_smetanko@...> IPADDUnite Sent: Fri, February 26, 2010 7:10:42 PM Subject: Re: ssi  That is way different info than they gave me From: sunshinebeaches3@ aol.com <sunshinebeaches3@ aol.com> ubject: Re: ssi o: IPADDUnite@gro ups.com ate: Thursday, February 25, 2010, 10:37 AM I have another quick question. Guest guest
Shirley- If you are the payee, the rules are the same with one exception - for SSDI, you can actually save money as SSDI does NOT look at assets. UNLESS he also has Medicaid as Medicaid DOES look at assets. Remember, if the SSDI or SSI recipient is 18 years old or older, I suggest the following: 1)     Open a checking account titled:  _(parent’s name)_ as representative payee for _(adult child’s name)_. Open this account using the adult child’s social security #. I would wait to open this account until you receive the child’s first SSDI /SSI check as money used to open this account may count as income for the adult child.  2)     ONLY his/her SSDI or SSI money should be deposited into this account. No working money; no holiday money; no birthday money  3)     SSDI money can ONLY be spent for the adult child’s SOLE benefit.  4)     Keep a VERY detailed ledger when writing a check. (ie: 2 line ledger: Walgreens - medication, The Gap – 2 pairs of jeans, Jewel – food).  5)     Every year, you – as payee- will receive a form. This form will ask you how the adult child’s SSDI /SSI money was spent during the year. Your detailed ledger will help you complete this form.  6)     Many people get audited by SSDI/SSI Your detailed ledger will help with this.  7)     It is always best to use a check written DIRECTLY to where the purchase is taking place. Should you wish to reimburse yourself, you will need to keep the original receipt and proof that the original purchase was for the adult child.  8)     Remember ALL monthly income MUST be timely reported to SSDI/SSI. Should he/she get a job, remember to send ALL checkstubs to SSDI /SSI on a MONTHLY basis – certified mail - with a signature return receipt requested. This way, you will have a record as to who received this mail at the Social Security office. The amount the adult child earns monthly may affect his/her SSDI /SSI benefit amount monthly.  9)     Remember: any change in the adult child’s income, assets, school attendance, address or living arrangement MUST be reported to SSDI/SSI within 10 days of the change. I recommend reporting ALL changes via certified mail with a signature return receipt requested.  Hope this helps.   ________________________________ From: Shirley Linden <slpanda2@...> IPADDUnite Sent: Tue, March 2, 2010 8:07:25 AM Subject: Re: ssi  Hi Sherri, my son gets SSDI. I just have the money direct deposited to my account. He is not even on the account. It has been this way since he turned 18 about 10 years ago. Are the rules for SSDI different? I am the payee. I am so happy to hear you can get the answers for us. Every time I call Social Security it takes forever to get an answer and I get different answers every time. I just say oh well, I will keep doing what I am doing and if they don't like it, they will let me know. Thanks Sherri. Guest guest
I haven't set anything up yet, if I'm his payee then I have to write the checks, correct? and if I'm not the payee then there could be a redetermination issue? I think I just answered my own question......:-) I need to make sure he looks as helpless as possible which doesn't set well with me but I know it's part of the game we have to play. H. You are rrect that nothing can be done until the month following the 18th birthday.... rst of all we had to obtain a lawyer and get guardianship of our son as soon possible after his 18th birthday. I recommend not contacting Social Security til May 1. I called in Dec to make the appt in Jan and asked them if that was .. I was given the ok but when I had my phone interview, the interviewer nted to go back to the day I called for the appt. and use my husband and mine come. I said that I would cancel this appt and make another one, especially nce I had asked ahead of time about the timing. She then dropped it and said e would date it for the day of the interview. When you call after May 1st, d set up your phone interview, they will send you a packet for you to fill t. It contained papers that give them consent to contact whoever they needed as ar as doctors and financial institutions to verify any information. It will so include a website for you to fill out paperwork. Allow lots of time, pecially if your son has had many doctors and appts. They want to know erytime he has seen the doctor, what doctor, including address and phone mber and what the appt was for. This needs to be done before the phone terview. They will go over all of this in the phone interview also, in case u might have forgotton something. I would say it took me 2 hours to fill out e work online, and did not have many medical problems and the phone terview took another hour. You have time to get all this stuff together fore then. My interviewer said she would send it in that day via the internet d it could take anywhere from 1 to 4 months to get an answer. She did mail me opy of what was sent in. Guest guest
I haven't set anything up yet, if I'm his payee then I have to write the checks, correct? and if I'm not the payee then there could be a redetermination issue?
