And we want to cry right along with you, Liz. I imagine this only increases the

weight I know you must feel on your shoulders -- that said, you are SUCH a good

mom, checking the snack box/bed, straightening the sock drawer.

And can I just say? Geez Louise! A moldy twinkie? Who knew such a thing was

even possible with a twinkie??????

I thought they had so many chemicals in them they were indestructible. (trying

to make you smile there). Makes you wonder how old that poor thing was to have

gotten moldy. What a world!!!

Hope today is a better day. Good luck with that supervisor.

Hugs,

Laurie

We've moved from annoying to disgusting

As some of you know, there have been some little things at my son's facility

that have been annoying. Tonight, it bordered on disgusting.

I was helping him put his snacks away in his snack box. I noticed that he had

some crackers in there that were kind of stale, so I took them out. I decided to

see what else he had in there that he might not like.

I found a MOLDY Twinkie. I showed one of the staff members(that I like) & she

told me that sometimes the residents put things in other people's snack

boxes.... but that they(the staff) don't usually check the boxes; but that they

do check to see what snack is eating. does sometimes eat Twinkies, but

hasn't lately. I go through his snack box on occasion, but not often....UNTIL

TONIGHT. Another thing I'm adding to the list. grrrr. (threw the twinkie, but I

have witnesses)

Then I went in his room to help him with his coat. I noticed the sheets on his

bed were rather disgusting looking. (Took those off, changed them & brought it

home with me....so that it can go back tomorrow, so the " supervisor " can see it.

Straightened out his sock drawer again, too, so he can find his socks. At

least that was only annoying & not disgusting.

Some nights I just want to cry.

Good morning Liz:

If it will make you feel any better (it probably won't), my 25 year old who is

still living at home, has many petrified, putrified and other unsavory items up

in his room. In spite of the rest of my house being clean and unmoldy, his room

should have a giant sign on the door that says condemned. I won't even try to

describe the piles of clothes on the floor, but, suffice to say, his entire

wardrobe (most of which doesn't fit him anymore since he has packed on the

pounds in the past couple of years of depression), is scattered about on the

floor.

Even in my own home, I feel rather powerless to control everything...it is a

startling revelation.

Your partner in empathy and mold,

Ellen

By the way...I agree with Laurie...I didn't think Twinkies could ever mold!

My schizophrenic brother who lives in an assisted living facility in Dallas, TX

says that everyone steals his things.  When I visited him in October I found

all the missing " things " in his closet.  But you're right, the staff doesn't

usually have a clue what goes on and I consider them to be a good staff.  When

I go to see him he is unkempt and slovenly looking.  No Twinkie's though.  I

always thought the white stuff in the center was post dated past molding.

May I humbly suggest it has very little to do with disabilities, but rather

(gasp) it is a guy control thing.

relunctantly, I have to suggest some guys want to be in control of their stuff.

Stuff being anything including but not limited to left over pb & j 99% eaten

sandwiches. I agree, too, that twinkies NEVER age or grow mold!

It is best described as the way gals like chocolate for comfort, some guys are

comforted by  a messy room -- look at Madison of The Odd Couple - PLUS

its his mess. He owns it.

This may well be amplified by disabilities - but I doubt it as my 22 year old

male child's room here at home may warrant a carbon copy of the condemned sign.

BUT we have always said it is HIS room and he trusts that fact. When he is home

from school, there is the occasional shifting of stuff

but not much more... :(

Could be you are right, Gordon, that Jordan's mega-messy room is all about

control. IT does make sense. The reason I do not clean or straighten my son's

room is exactly what you said...I respect his right to his own space...I will,

however draw the line if something comes crawling out of his room, towards mine!

LOL.  If I see anything crawling out of my kids room I would draw the line

too.  My younger son was always messy.  Piles of clean and dirty clothes,

papers, everything but food, all over his floor.   I draw the line at if you

eat in your room make sure the plates, cups, empty bags, food garbage etc, gets

to the kitchen.  So I just closed his door and let him live like that if he

wanted to.  He has now bought a condo and moved out.  Now my son with DS is

much neater.  HAS to put everything away everyday.

My son, Noah, with his autism and his little OCD-type behaviors always likes

everything in it's proper place! Sometimes our children's " disabilities " are a

My daughter, the college student, knows that when she is away at school, her

bedroom becomes the guest room and I WILL clean it to my satisfaction. So

the more organized she leaves it, the more likely she is to come back to it

the way she wants it. On the other hand, when we see her at school I laugh

merrily at her room. where you can't see the floor.

Don't think I'd wanna wait six months, but the Twinkie I pulled out of my son's

snack box was DEFINETELY moldy. Not all of it, but almost 1/2. Pretty disgusting

& not a fun thing for a guy who's blind to discover....

Glad he didn't eat it.
