Guest guest
The amount of food stamps someone gets is based on: - their income        AND - where they live Unfortunately - NOT what they need. By the way, food stamps are no longer called food stamps. This program is now called S.N.A.P.  Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)   ________________________________ From: Bruce <elmopetkus@...> IPADDUnite Sent: Fri, January 22, 2010 7:25:09 AM Subject: Group home Special diet and food stamps  My son lives in a cila home. Guest guest
: You are absolutely right that diet matters. It would probably be useful, if you can, to take your son to a physician, if you can find one who accepts Medicaid, to get a second opinion about the importance of diet...maybe staff would listen and respond if there was a doctor's order for a specific reduced cholesterol diet. ANother strategy, might be to try some different lower cholesterol foods/meals when your son comes home for visits and if you meet with success (no temper tantrums) maybe staff would be more willing to try those changes in the CILA. I think it is unfortunate that staff added new medication without letting you know...I am not sure what your rights are, in that regard... I am no expert on guardianship. Are you guardian for your son? If you are not a guardian for your son, I am not sure what rights you would have. If you are guardian, not sure why you had a problem. Can anyone on IPADDU comment about 's rights in regard to the medication, diet and guardianship? Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Guest guest
 DEEP BREATH  As my daughter's medical / dental team shared with us -  thank God well before she was 18, surgical procedures including dental done in hospital seetings generally require a signature on the informed consent form before the procedure can proceed.  It seems to me for whatever reasons, as I do not think I have ever had the pleasure of meeting you or your son, someone connected the dots and felt your son could not give informed consent and without guardianship in place -- STOP THE PRESSES ! or in this instant case - the surgical procedure.  Not good, but it seems to me the person connecting the dots was trying even though frustrating and ugly -- to protect your son's rights! This is a good thing, really!  Time and again I am reminded of the the great thing about this list is the sharing and resources. Just recently someone published an offer of initial free legal advice. My suggestion is you need to talk with an attorney about the best way to respond to your situation. It may be guardianship is right or maybe something else -- what I have no idea but use the resources.  Speaking of resources... there are resources and there are resources. As someone else already posted, SNAP aka FOOD STAMPS reflects age, living location as well as income. NO wiggle room really in that program -- BUT if its a CILA I am lost as to the issue you are raising? Forgive me but my experience says CILA = residents can control menu driven by ability to pay Help me get the issue...  Medically necessary dr referrals to a nutritionist/dietary consult may or may not be provided. You need to talk with case manager. Menus inclusive of small amounts of kids favs might be able to be built in -- just thinking out loud to be of help  If your son's doctor writes a dr  order for specific dietary supplements as medically necessary e.g. for nutrition and your son is on Medicaid -- guess who gets to provide it then -- YUP, Medicaid  An example, a diabetic patient who needs Glucera -- the non sugar equalivalent to Ensure or Boost -- as a medical necessity for nutrition - BINGO!  Chloestral management issues much harder - I hear ya!  All I am trying to suggest is we all think outside of the box as we try to team together to meet all our kids needs.  g Humbly grateful to be your companion on the journey...
