Guest guest
I would encourage everyone to give serious consideration to Pam's suggestions. Adults with I/DD voting Happy New Year - In the past, we have debated the ethics of people with Intellectual/Developmental disabilities voting. Some of us believe our adult children with I/DD can make a choice after being given the information in clear, understandable words and support to indicate their choice. Some of us believe our adult children with I/DD are not capable of making an informed decision regardless of how the information is presented and supports provided. If you wondered if your adult child with I/DD might be able to vote with the appropriate supports - please download the Voter's Registration application and get it into the mail TOMORROW. Two forms of identification with at least one showing your current residence address is needed when you register in-person. If you register by mail sufficient proof of identity is required by submission of your driver's license number or State identification card number. If you don't have either of those, verification by the last 4 digits of the your social security number, a copy of a current and valid photo identification, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or other government document that shows your name and address will be required. Guest guest
Not to be a Devil's Advocate, exactly, but if you DON'T feel comfortable with your loved one voting that is your decision--just make sure YOU VOTE! We are a very political family--who else would schedule a family vacation to DC around their congressman's schedule?--but have decided, at least for now, is not capable of understanding some of the issues in voting. It is not the accommodations of the actual physical act of voting but what his vote means...and my husband and I don't feel comfortable. There are time constraints in voting for this primary but I am surprised no one mentioned the motor/voter angle. When got his latest ID card, we were asked if we would like to register him to vote....simple, because, as much as we have problems with the REST of state government, the Sec of State does a good job (my brother wants White to run for governor.....hmmmmm?). We always try to represent ALL views here at IPADD, so please take my opinion as just that....MY opinion. Marie

Marie
