has had Medicaid since he was 18. We'd been using his SSI money until he

went into the home. Then I bought the one he's using now. I know some people who

use white canes that I'll ask. I never thought of them as being medical

equipment though....I won't even tell you what I do for a living....

That'd be way cool if we didn't have to fork out the money for one now; esp

since my money tree died.

I just made a few calls to Medicaid's pharmacy approval department and was told

the following:

- a white cane is considered Durable Medical Equipment

- It needs to be medically necessary

- you need a prescription from a doctor

- you need to find a medical supply store that accepts IL Medicaid

- the store can order the cane and submit prior approval paperwork to Medicaid.

(prior approval is needed for all Durable Medical Equipment).

Hope this helps. If you have a problem, I can try to help.

Sherri,

Thanks for the info.....Below is an email that I got today after sending one to

Medicaid..

I will bring this up at our meeting Friday at the facility & see who will be

taking care of it.......I'll bet it will be me.

Liz

Ms. ,

The Department covers medically necessary items dependent on a person's type of

coverage. If your son has basic medicaid and the item is not covered by any

other agency, we would cover it. You just need to visit a physician who accepts

Medicaid.
