Guest guest
Ruth Ann's info is correct but I hear the 800 number may not be working??? If that is the case, I suggest you call Ken Eggers at 215-731-2281 and complain... Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Re: union SEIU has found another loop hole to jump through. Despite a clearly-worded memo and an even stronger worded letter from the state to strictly limit all communication to the Executive Order and to remain neutral or risk DHS contracts, SEIU has found a way to get what appears to be a reputable organization, in this case a state ARC, to push us to vote for SEIU. ::sigh:: There is no way those of us who want voters to consider NO union representation can compete with these strong-arm tactics. ::sigh:: For those who want to learn a bit more about Michigan: In Michigan, this letter says there has been a 55% increase - this is for senior care, nursing homes, Child care providers, mental health and DD/MR.. Added all together. In Michigan, personal support workers are called Home Help providers. All are unionized with SEIU. Who Provides the Services? Home Help Consumers employ thier own providers. Providers are not employed by DHS or the State of Michigan. Providers may be friends, relatives, neighbors, or employees of home help agencies. A Consumer's spouse, or a parent caring for a child under 18, cannot be paid by DHS. Some DHS offices keep lists of people willing to perform these services. How Much Are Providers Paid ? The DHS worker, with the Consumer and Provider, will decide how much help the Consumer needs every month. This is based on the Consumer's physical and mental condition and home situation. The worker may then use a reasonable time schedule to see how many hours can be allowed for each needed service. Training for Home Help providers include: Working with Someone with Dementia: Environmental & Communication Strategies (Level 1) Working with Someone with Dementia: Assessing Caregiver Interactions (Level 2) Working with Someone with Dementia: Distressing Behaviors Occurring Spontaneously and During Tasks (Level 3) Adult Abuse & Neglect Prevention Stress Management & Self Determination Adult CPR & First Aid Body Mechanics The Culture of Cleaning Meal Planning, Shopping and Food Safety Consumers as Employers This new series of trainings for Consumers will guide individuals in defining their needs in a personal assistant and assessing a good fit. They will learn techniques & proper processes for interview, hiring and termination, if needed. They will also review good communication skills as a supervisor. Guest guest
Best Buddies is a great group. Some are better than others, depending on how vested they are in the philosophy. We have had some great buddies, others ok, but always worthwhile. I encourage anyone looking for peers to socialize with individuals to look into Best Buddies. They go from middle school, thru college and up to Best Buddies Citizen which is for older adults, and they have ebuddies too. Guest guest
I, and two PSW's working for Steph, did not receive ballots. How many others did not? I was told my name wasn't even on the list - I'm waiting to hear from the others. The person who called me said she didn't know how names were pulled, but I thought I had heard/read somewhere that it was PSW's paid in July of last year. I submitted hours for June and, but it is possible that no check was written as I was dealing with my mom's illness at the time and may have submitted them late. How will we know that all current PSW's were contacted? and had a chance to vote? Gloria

Guest guest
We always thought that would be a good idea, but it's not so easy. We tried through the school, but found only a few schools in the area have a program, and the nearest one that did (son) limited enrollment to their own students. Now in transition, we've applied to the college/citizens program, but it's been several months and they said in can be 6 months or even much longer before anyone is " matched " . > > Best Buddies is a great group. Guest guest
Gloria: You bring up a good point...we should be checking with our loved one's PSWs to make sure they got ballots! I never even thought to do that...but I will, starting right now! Thanks. Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Re: union I, and two PSW's working for Steph, did not receive ballots. Guest guest
I don't know where you are located, but Best Buddies at University was accepting referrals. It is in Romeoville, south of Bolingbrook. A Dr. Sloan is in charge. I don't have her number handy, but I'm sure if you call and ask for her you can get her. If this is convenient, and you have a problem, contact me and I'll find the info. Gloria

Guest guest
Spoke to Madigan's Office this afternoon about the impact created by E0 2009-15 The response was they have recieved a lot of calls. They are exploring the complicated jurisdictional issues regarding the organizing effort, election, etc., as well as the question of is there any criminal activity. They are not yet involved but eager to listen! If you have any evidence, please forward it to Jon Rosenblatt, Attorney General Madigan, 13th Floor, R Center, Randolph at LaSalle, Chicago, IL 60601 or call him at 800 386 5438. Union representation elections are suppose to be one of the purest forms of protecting your right to vote! Free of coercision, threats, restraint, etc! Complicated and tricky for Madigan's Office to get fully engaged given the law, but it sounds like her office is listening and if evidence turns up that allows her jurisdiction she will review and act!! It seems to me, by law, the Illinois Public Sector Labor Relations Board or the National Labor Relations Board dependent on jurisdictional issues should have jurisdiction - yet we have AAA I am just one parent of an adult with dvelopemental disabilities what would I know... WE ALL NEED TO CALL THE GOV'S OFFICE Talk with Amy at 312 814 1175 and ask her why Quinn will not rescind 2009 -15! If you have evidence, you need to get it to Madigan's Office! Write or call Mr Rosenblatt! Humbly grateful to be your companion on the journey... Gordon P.
