Hi ,

Has anyone else received a letter from the Arc of Michigan? If so, can you send

it to me electronically?

The Arc of Michigan is different from the Arc of IL because the Arc of Michigan

is strictly an advocacy organization. The Arc of IL has chapters across the

state that are agencies who provide services.

Any agency in IL that provides any services related to the Home-Based Support

Services Program has been notified by the State (Central Management Services and

DHS) to strictly limit all of the communication to the election to the Executive

Order. Any agency who dares speak up at all – risks their DHS contracts!!!!

Both SEIU and ASCME have long, rich histories of suing organizations for

violating an unfair labor practice.

We are alone. IL’s disability community agencies are tied into the state

funding stream or already has employees who are unionized – they cannot

jeopardize their entire organizations funding with DHS or costly court battles.

SEIU has been able to catapult through a loophole and drag Access Living with

them. That’s why SEIU sent all personal support workers a letter from Access

Living’s President/CEO, Marca Bristo.

When the state issued the gag orders to the very people we rely on to help us

navigate and interpret the complexities of IL's Medicaid waiver programs - the

State left us alone.

There is no one who, after receiving the gag orders, willing to discuss the

union election. I'm not saying they can't encourage us to vote for either union

or no union - I am saying our agency facilitators cannot provide us with ANY

information - no accurate, neutral information. Nothing.

It's not okay. I feel as if the State of IL is on the side of the union.

We often are behind in mail etc..Art, Adam's psw read to me mail he reiceved

from the exec of the Michigan Arc supporting and encouraging membership to

the union because it has done sucha great job. Besides IPADD is there any

group in Il. that has publically takena position that independence ie no

union is the way family members/psw want to go and support that position.

It is certainly a lonely position right now. Cindi

remember which one, because it, that union, has doen so much for the

workers. That in itself seems like a conflict of interest, management

encouraging unionization...should be silent first of all, and any position

one would think would be non. union.

SEIU has found another loop hole to jump through.

Despite a clearly-worded memo and an even stronger worded letter from the state

to strictly limit all communication to the Executive Order and to remain neutral

or risk DHS contracts, SEIU has found a way to get what appears to be a

reputable organization, in this case a state ARC, to push us to vote for SEIU.

::sigh:: There is no way those of us who want voters to consider NO union

representation can compete with these strong-arm tactics. ::sigh::

For those who want to learn a bit more about Michigan:

In Michigan, this letter says there has been a 55% increase - this is for senior

care, nursing homes, Child care providers, mental health and DD/MR. Added all

together.

In Michigan, personal support workers are called Home Help providers. All are

unionized with SEIU.

Who Provides the Services?

Home Help Consumers employ thier own providers. Providers are not employed by

DHS or the State of Michigan. Providers may be friends, relatives, neighbors, or

employees of home help agencies. A Consumer's spouse, or a parent caring for a

child under 18, cannot be paid by DHS. Some DHS offices keep lists of people

willing to perform these services.

How Much Are Providers Paid ?

The DHS worker, with the Consumer and Provider, will decide how much help the

Consumer needs every month. This is based on the Consumer's physical and mental

condition and home situation. The worker may then use a reasonable time schedule

to see how many hours can be allowed for each needed service.

Training for Home Help providers include:

Working with Someone with Dementia:

Environmental & Communication Strategies (Level 1)

Working with Someone with Dementia:

Assessing Caregiver Interactions (Level 2)

Working with Someone with Dementia:

Distressing Behaviors Occurring Spontaneously and During Tasks (Level 3)

Adult Abuse & Neglect Prevention

Stress Management & Self Determination

Adult CPR & First Aid

Body Mechanics

The Culture of Cleaning

Meal Planning, Shopping and Food Safety

Consumers as Employers

This new series of trainings for Consumers will guide individuals in defining

their needs in a personal assistant and assessing a good fit. They will learn

techniques & proper processes for interview, hiring and termination, if needed.

They will also review good communication skills as a supervisor.

The Arc of Michigan is different from the Arc of IL because the Arc of

Michigan is strictly an advocacy organization. The Arc of IL has chapters

across the state that are agencies who provide services.

Any agency in IL that provides any services related to the Home-Based

Support Services Program has been notified by the State (Central Management

Services and DHS) to strictly limit all of the communication to the election

to the Executive Order. Any agency who dares speak up at all – risks their

DHS contracts!!! An

SEIU has been able to catapult through a loophole and drag Access Living

with them. That’s why SEIU sent all personal support workers a letter from

Access Living’s President/CEO, Marca Bristo.

When the state issued the gag orders to the very people we rely on to help

us navigate and interpret the complexities of IL's Medicaid waiver

programs - the State left us alone.

There is no one who, after receiving the gag orders, willing to discuss

the union election. I'm not saying they can't encourage us to vote for either

union or no union - I am saying our agency facilitators cannot provide us

with ANY information - no accurate, neutral information. Nothing.

It's not okay. I feel as if the State of IL is on the side of the union.

Despite a clearly-worded memo and an even stronger worded letter from the state

Consumer needs every month. This is based on the Consumer's physical and mental

to see how many hours can be allowed for each needed service.

The Arc of Michigan is different from the Arc of IL because the Arc of

Michigan is strictly an advocacy organization. The Arc of IL has chapters

across the state that are agencies who provide services.

Any agency in IL that provides any services related to the Home-Based

Support Services Program has been notified by the State (Central

election

to the Executive Order. Any agency who dares speak up at all – risks their

Both SEIU and ASCME have long, rich histories of suing organizations for

violating an unfair labor practice.

We are alone. IL’s disability community agencies are tied into the state

funding stream or already has employees who are unionized – they cannot

jeopardize their entire organizations funding with DHS or costly court

battles.

I'm not saying they can't encourage us to vote for

either

union or no union - I am saying our agency facilitators cannot provide us

with ANY information - no accurate, neutral information. Nothing.

It's not okay. I feel as if the State of IL is on the side of the union.

On a completely different topic from the unions, I would like to share some

information about the Benedictine University( Lisle ) Best Buddies

Chapter. Our daughter ( she has Down syndrome) is the Buddy Director

along

with a, her best buddy, who is the College Buddy Director at

Benedictine. They would like to put the word out that they are seeking new

members for

the Benedictine chapter. If you have young adults , 18 years old and older

with disabilities who would be interested in joining this chapter, please

contact me offline and I will provide you with all the contact information.

The chapter does a variety of group activities . Individuals may also be

matched one-one with Benedictine college buddies . Our daughter has been

involved with Best Buddies for a number of years and it has been a positive

experience for all involved.

The mission statement for Best Buddies is : " Best Buddies is a non-profit

501©(3) organization dedicated

to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for

one-to-one friendships , integrated employment and leadership development

for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. "

Thanks,

and

Ruth Ann's info is correct but I hear the 800 number may not be working??? If

that is the case, I suggest you call Ken Eggers at 215-731-2281 and complain...

Re: union

SEIU has found another loop hole to jump through.

Despite a clearly-worded memo and an even stronger worded letter from the

state to strictly limit all communication to the Executive Order and to remain

neutral or risk DHS contracts, SEIU has found a way to get what appears to be a

reputable organization, in this case a state ARC, to push us to vote for SEIU.

::sigh:: There is no way those of us who want voters to consider NO union

representation can compete with these strong-arm tactics. ::sigh::

For those who want to learn a bit more about Michigan:

In Michigan, this letter says there has been a 55% increase - this is for

senior care, nursing homes, Child care providers, mental health and DD/MR..

Added all together.

In Michigan, personal support workers are called Home Help providers. All are

unionized with SEIU.

Who Provides the Services?

Home Help Consumers employ thier own providers. Providers are not employed by

DHS or the State of Michigan. Providers may be friends, relatives, neighbors, or

employees of home help agencies. A Consumer's spouse, or a parent caring for a

child under 18, cannot be paid by DHS. Some DHS offices keep lists of people

willing to perform these services.

How Much Are Providers Paid ?

The DHS worker, with the Consumer and Provider, will decide how much help the

Consumer needs every month. This is based on the Consumer's physical and mental

condition and home situation. The worker may then use a reasonable time schedule

to see how many hours can be allowed for each needed service.

Training for Home Help providers include:

Working with Someone with Dementia:

Environmental & Communication Strategies (Level 1)

Working with Someone with Dementia:

Assessing Caregiver Interactions (Level 2)

Working with Someone with Dementia:

Distressing Behaviors Occurring Spontaneously and During Tasks (Level 3)

Adult Abuse & Neglect Prevention

Stress Management & Self Determination

Adult CPR & First Aid

Body Mechanics

The Culture of Cleaning

Meal Planning, Shopping and Food Safety

Consumers as Employers

This new series of trainings for Consumers will guide individuals in defining

their needs in a personal assistant and assessing a good fit. They will learn
