Guest guest
I will defer a response to Pam, who has become quite knowledgeable... I will tender an opinion...while it is true that the whole mess started with Blagojevich, Quinn did NOT have to follow through...I believe that he did so for the same basic reason that Blago was going to do it...to curry favor with the union in order to stay in the Governor's office (in other words, for union support and votes)...He did not do this with the best interest of our children and loved ones in mind...I believe, as I have said before, it will limit the flexibility of the homebased support program and it will add an unnecessary and burdensome level of bureaucracy... There are THREE options, AFSCME, SEIU and NO UNION!!! I vote for option #3... Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... AFSCME at my door So today 2 people from AFSCME came knocking on my door and did not want to leave until I signed their card. They said Gov. Quinn's office gave them our information because SEIU made a back door agreement with Blagojevich months ago. They said if AFSCME doesn't get enough cards signed we will not have a choice if a Union is voted for. They said SEIU already had their 30% and filed a few days ago. They said SEIU wants to give all the funding to Home Based Services and nothing else. I got the guys name and number if anyone wants to talk to him. I told him that I wanted to investigate more and decide if I want a union or not. He talked my ear off. He gave me 2 articles one from the Wall Street journal Jan. 7th Service Union Chief Met with Blagojevich. It says The federal complaint alleges that one of Mr. Blagojevich's plans was to appoint a labor-friendly candidate to the vacated Ill Senate seat in exchange for a $300,000 a year position at an SEIU-affiliated labor federation called Change to win. It said SEIU was the governors biggest campaign contributor $1.8 million for his 2 campaigns for Gov. Etc Etc. My head is spinning. I know I should not have opened the door. I told him I would get back to him. He wanted to follow up with me and wanted my number but I said no. He said we will not have a choice if people vote for a union it will be SEIU and that it looks like we will be stuck with a union. Has anyone got to the bottom of all this? Is this true? At least he told me where they got all their info. Shirley

Guest guest
Hi Shirley – First, it sure is hard when these (very well trained) union reps are talking at us. They make it seem so simple, sincere and legitimate. A big pat on the back for you for not signing and wanting to get information. Everyone I spoke to believes that the election will be held by secret ballot and AFSCME, SEIU and NO UNION will be the 3 choices. Since SEIU got their people at our doors quickly, it’s not surprising they got their 30% cards signed and filed for an election. They are the front runner. WE STILL HAVE THE OPTION OF VOTING NO UNION!!!!!! Whether or not SEIU wants to use all the funding for Home-Based – I doubt it. It sounds far too extreme and more like a scare tactic. I do know that AFSCME will continue to maintain and increase state-operated developmental centers, like Howe. It is in their literature and on their website. Yes, blago was hoping for a key position with SEIU. It was in the papers and subject of many news stories. What he intended to do to get the position is a topic for the courts in his upcoming trial in June. From what I understand, SEIU filed for the PSWs contact info from the state under the Freedom of Information Act. Whether or not Gov. Quinn HAD to sign the Executive Order is a matter of debate. But he did sign it. Probably he did so because he values the Union’s support – their money and their manpower. Hope this helps. Pam

Guest guest
Thanks Pam. I guess what I do not understand is, why does AFSCME need cards signed to be on the ballet? There are so many more people then us so what if the rest of the people vote for a union? Which one is better? SEIU sounds like they already have lots of PSW and parents behind them, or is that untrue? I plan on voting for NO UNION but if we get stuck with one, I just wonder which is the lesser of the evils? Guest guest
AFSMCE would like to get 30% (of about 3,500) signed, too. They still will be on the ballot. SEIU needed to get 50%+1 to become the union with NO election. SEIU did get the 30%, quickly. And they filed for the election. They are in a good position. The two unions differ in one big way. SEIU does not favor continuing institutions - like Howe. AFSCME wants to keep Howe open and other large institutions. As for me, I don't want the union in my home. I don't need a union. My vote is NO UNION. Pam

Guest guest
Someone has to be paying for these folks. I would assume that it is current union members elsewhere -- which means that if IL becomes a union state, union members here will be paying for these organizers to go elsewhere. It doesn't add up to quality care for people in IL. I told him that I wanted to investigate more and decide if I want a union or not. He talked my ear off. He gave me 2 articles one from the Wall Street journal Jan. 7th Service Union Chief Met with Blagojevich. It says The federal complaint alleges that one of Mr. Blagojevich' s plans was to appoint a labor-friendly candidate to the vacated Ill Senate seat in exchange for a $300,000 a year position at an SEIU-affiliated labor federation called Change to win. Shirley
Guest guest
Thanks...now we all have to spread the word within our networks, neighborhoods, etc... Guest guest
I say we print out NO UNION signs on our PC printers and post them on our front doors to discourage the union reps from knocking at our doors.
