Guest guest
Thanks for giving those of us who are not in favor of unionizing DSP/PSW's a little ammo... and thanks also for my chuckle of the day. Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Concerns with Unions and their efforsts raising a concern. It has started. Two weeks ago litature in the mail from two different entities: AFSCME, Council 31. I have forgoten the other, maybe SEIU. Second, phone calls from both. Asking for both of my In Home support Workers. I asked how they got names and info. Reply, The State. Requested Both, take off list and not to call. This Monday, Two individuals showed up at my door again, asking for Home base workers to join the union. I drilled them for info again. Suggested an invaision of privacy. They said they got information again from state. ( I truly question given December 2008, The refusal to turn over a list to the pests.) I asked them where is the money going to come from to pay for the unions overhead, administraition, wages, benefits, perks when the amount that is allocated to the waiver program is no even enough to support the current needs. They assured me they were going to work hard to increase the the funds coming into the waiver program. My comment to them, for those who now me, GOOD LUCK! & Stop traying to reduce what little resources are availeble to our individuals. I made a strong request for them, again, to remove my workers for their list and their bodies from my propery. Most Import thing I had forgoten*******(I used Today when the second union rep. came to my door.) Our community has an ordinace that any one coming into the community to solicit needs to have a permit. So, when AFSCME Council 31 showed up, I asked them all the info to report to the police. They do not have a permit of the right to be doing this. I have shared the with Assocs. Secretary Grace Hou at a meeting yesterday. I ask her if there was a way to may family information private and unaccessable the these entities. There were others that were present the resounded that these occerences are creating serious conseqences for them and their workers. If these unions are approaching your personal propery the poliece advise you to stop by, file a report, get a no tresspass sign, a no solisitation sign, call them. Asking for dues to join the union is soliciting money and forbiden. check your local ordineces, must residence are unaware of this.

Guest guest
Absolutely, Colleen... By the way, it may seem obvious but any of you whose children have DSP's outside of family members, don't forget to contact them and discuss your views on joining or not joining either of the unions. Caution them not to sign anything if they don't wish to join a union. I totally forgot to contact one of Noah's DSP's who doesn't work for him during the summer...I just did contact her...hopefully she has not signed anything yet! Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Any statements they make, write it down and get them to sign it. Don't sign ANYTHING unless you have fully read, understand, and agree. There have been reported instances of them telling people that they are " only " signifying that the rep has been there while in fact they would be indicating their desire to unionize. Guest guest
Our circumstances are often so extreme. e.g.; not many support workers are capable of caring for medically fragile and complicated individuals and many others are not willing to care for individuals with aggressive behaviors...I think, if an article or letter to the editor were framed well, it would be effective. I agree, , that misinterpretation and general ignorance could generate stupid questions and comments...I think it would be a risk worth taking in highlighting the often impossible circumstances in which many of us must exist. Guest guest
Ellen, you're braver than me. I remember one time on an AOL parenting message board, I was explaining the Support Living Assistant program that Angel was receiving and the ignorant wenches that complained about us receiving these services for free. They tried to compare these services to welfare or free 'babysitting'. I literally had my account suspended for seven days because of my response to this person (I called her an appropriate, but very nasty name). To anyone out there who do 'work' for their children and are brave enough to go public, I would suggest a very long narrative on what you do, why you do it, why it's needed, etc. From: rams110300 <rams110300@ . com> Subject: Concerns with Unions and their efforsts raising a concern. Most Import thing I had forgoten**** ***(I used Today when the second union rep. came to my door.) Our community has an ordinace that any one coming into the community to solicit needs to have a permit.
