Guest guest
Hope alive as US ups support for HIV and Aids Published on 02/12/2011 By DANN OKOTH HIV and Aids programmes in Kenya got a boost last night after the US announced plans to increase support to scale up anti-retroviral treatment globally. The announcement came as new science suggests treatment curtails spread of the virus. In a televised speech to the nation streamed across the world, President Barack Obama said his government would invest more in the area of HIV and Aids treatment in a renewed effort to stem the pandemic. " We know treatment is also prevention. And today, we are setting a new target of helping six million people get treatment by the end of 2013, " Obama said in the speech delivered from the White House. He added: " That is two million people more than our original goal. " Currently, the US Government supports anti-retroviral treatment for four million people. In Kenya where such support is channeled through US government agencies and US-based NGOs, the news was warmly received. " This is the best news to have come out of US at this time, " declared Dr Muraguri, head of the National Aids and STI Control Programme. Prof Alloys Orago, the chairman of National AIDS Control Council, said such developments would mean Kenya would have to review its treatment policy to include groups that were hitherto not catered for. http://www.standardmedia.co.ke/news/InsidePage.php?id=2000047687 & cid=159 & story=H\ ope alive as US ups support for HIV and Aids
