Bwana Kombo,If I can remember very well, Kenya as a cohessive nation did not exist in the minds of many people, the reason why everyone were confined to where they were born. It was in its formative state and to say there was tribalism before independence is just missing the point. It was a wild West, just like in the U.S in its formative years. In any case what was causing tribalism if the means of transport to take a Luo to Kikuyu land or vice versa did not exist? I think some people are trying to justify tribalism that its ok because its started even before Kenyatta era. Without tribal tribal politics, they would have nothing to talk about. I am wrong, i think - three people have already told me so.But tell me: before independence Kenyans/Africans were butchering one another for cattles etc whihc meant that a Kikuyu cannot actually go to Luoland and stay there....so what happened? Mkoloni came to colonize us. Focus shifted a little bit to defending our land. Each tribe had their own militia. Then after independence, still there were issues 'inter tribe' = was this not tribalism? The thing is that the two Raila and Muite were directing their statements to Kenyatta and Moi - but this guys too inherited a tribal nation. Otherwise, they could have stopped tribalism at independence!
