2007 World AIDS Marathon with your help it will happen My name is Brodsky. I'm HIV-positive, a brain cancer survivor, a marathon runner and I'm married to the same woman, Jodi for the past 27 years. My foundation, the M. Brodsky Foundation is seeking donations so we can return to Kenya and help raise global awareness that 8,500 people cannot be allowed to die from AIDS every year. It cannot be a question of which people live or die depending on where they were born. The AIDS medicine, medical care, clean drinking water, adequate nutritious food, free education and living in a poverty free community are basic undeniable human rights. It is also a moral right to provide funding to help rid the world of AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, and provide nurturing environments for the 14,000,000 orphans living in sub-Saharan Africa. It sickens me to no end when I hear Americans say that we need to take care of the people in our own country first. I wish I could give the next person who utters such words a one-way plane ticket to Africa and let them see what life is like living in poverty. We can take care of Americans and we can take care of people all over the world by ending our involvement in Iraq. We sure could save a lot more lives. We are now at a major crossroads with respect to AIDS. The recent Democratic Presidential debate featuring video questions submitted to YouTube and selected by a team of panelists working at CNN failed to ask a single question about AIDS to any of the candidates. After World War II it was discovered that 6,000,000 Jewish people were slaughtered during the Holocaust. No one realized the extent of the atrocities and deaths until after the war. We now know that 3,100,000 people are dying from AIDS every year and we are just not doing everything we can to reduce the number of deaths per year. The media, the government and so many other groups have chosen to ignore the subject of AIDS. Did you know that the United States Postal Service recently issued a 15 stamp commemorative sheet about the 30th anniversary of Star Wars? Well, what about reminding the American public how AIDS has destroyed communities around the world primarily due to the lack of AIDS medicine and follow-up medical care. If the media and government won't focus on AIDS, here's hoping the music industry will do their part to save lives. Kenyanna is a musical group comprised of Tom and Dan. These two Kenyan singers / bodybuilders describe their music as urban underground rap. Simply stated, they do not evoke negative images or slurry lyrics about women; they focus on the social injustices of society. They have offered to do benefit concerts for the M. Brodsky Foundation in America. You can hear them on a 5 minute video by clicking on to http://worldaidsmarathon.com and then click on Kenyanna, Live in Concert 5-minute video. I think they are super-high energy and their music resonates with power that rocks my core. Please have a look at their video and let me know what you think. I will be assisting them in finding an agent. Their music is both timely and passionate as it mandates that society take the necessary steps to make the world a better place. Am I alone on this? I really need your input as to the talent of these two gentlemen. Would you pay $20, $30, $40 or $50 to see them perform at a benefit concert? The rest of the press release is more specific to the work of the M. Brodsky Foundation. The M. Brodsky Foundation is seeking donations and sponsors so it can announce a 2007 World AIDS Marathon. If I had the money to sponsor a marathon and related events, I would have announced the marathon by now, but I don't. This is why I am pleading for your help. We are at a critical time in history as the number of deaths from AIDS has risen from 8,000 per day to 8,500. We can make a difference to reduce that number, but it will require YOUR help. I cannot run marathons, raise money for the marathon, care for my own health, provide the necessary funds to sponsor the 2007 World AIDS Marathon, sponsor a free concert (special thanks to His Imperial Majesty the Mighty King Kong, Limpopo International and Kenyanna for their musical performances) and provide a dinner for 500 of the 14,000,000 orphans in sub Saharan African without your help. November 30, 2006, Dinner for the 500 AIDS orphansat the YMCA in Kisumu, Kenya on the eve of the 2006 World AIDS MarathonHere's what I'd like to propose to the hundreds of people who are receiving this letter. If you could each raise $30 in the continental United States, $40 from abroad, I will send you a Certificate of Appreciation from the M. Brodsky Foundation. In addition, I will also send you a copy of a book I wrote, Jodi, The Greatest Love Story Ever Told. It's the story of a woman, my wife, who chose who to keep my family together and who had the courage to let me tell our story. -ForeWord Magazine (nominated best gay lesbian book of the year)A strongly moving book that portrays the strength of a family the way a family should be--compassionate, loving, forgiving, and whole. A recommended read.-MIDWEST BOOK REVIEWJodi is a profound and inspiring message of hope that embraces the rights of HIV-sufferers everywhere, and the patience and love of one dedicated, unique, and loyal woman. It's about ending the stigma of AIDS and raising awareness that HIV-positive people can live productive lives if they have access to the AIDS medicine and follow--up medical care, clean drinking water, an adequate supply of nutritious food and the desire to never give up--to lead an upbeat lifestyle comprised of moderate exercise, no smoking, no drinking, no alcohol, and most important of all safe sex. There is a DVD which you can see if you would like to visit Kenya and be a part of the 2004 World AIDS Marathon experience. The DVD can be viewed by visiting www.worldaidsmarathon.com and then clicking on World AIDS Marathon 2004 (5 or 21 minute video) at the left side at the top of the page The M. Brodsky Foundation kept its promise by making the 2006 World AIDS Weekend a memorable event for orphans, runners, people whose lives have been affected by AIDS, and the people of Kisumu, Kenya.Start of the 2006 World AIDS Marathon in Kisumu, Kenya How poetic that Zeus, the supreme God of Greek Mythology, had come to bless the 2006 World AIDS Marathon thousand of years after the first marathon in Greece. The foundation provided transportation, lodging and meals for 50 Kenyan runners as well as $1,000 in prize money to the fastest runners. We hope that others will help contribute towards these expenses so money can be donated to various AIDS projects, http://www.richardmbrodsky.org/support.html and these events can happen more often. Donations can be made via website, http://www.richardmbrodsky.org or http://www.worldaidsmarathon.com or by mailing a check to the M. Brodsky Foundation, 1247 Mara Court, Atlantic Beach, NY 11509. Senator Barack Obama has wished me success for all four World AIDS Marathons since 2004. It would be my greatest wish to inform Senator Obama that people in America are truly supportive of people whose lives have been affected by AIDS. As part of the 2006 World AIDS Marathon weekend, 86 people were tested for HIV in the very same city, Kisumu, where Senator Obama and his wife were tested. I would very much like to see many more people tested this year as part of the 2007 World AIDS Marathon events. This would apply to all people, however, it is even more critical for pregnant women to know their HIV-status. If a women is pregnant, she and her infant can take the drug neviripine during the birthing process, which will substantially increase the likelihood that her baby will be born HIV-negative. Jodi and Brodsky completing the 2006 Cape May, New Jersey Marathon flanked by Ivory, a breast cancer survivor who recently completed 9 marathons in 4 days. Running apparel companies, marathon race directors, running clubs and to anyone who has ever profited monetarily or physically from running, this is a win-win opportunity to raise awareness for promoting running, staying healthy, making money and donating some of the money to charities such as the M. Brodsky Foundation which focus on raising money by sponsoring athletic events. In closing, I'd like to tell you about a 5K race my wife and I competed in on June 24th, 2007. The race was sponsored by the students of NYU School of Medicine. The proceeds of the race will benefit AIDS charities in Malawi, http://www.5kforafrica.org/. I came in first place for men over 50! My time was not good as I pulled a hamstring which will set me back a few days. My question is, 'How is it that there were only about 100 runners and so few faculty members of NYU supporting the medical students?' Typically in races of 100-150 runners I come in 5th or 6th among men in my age group. Are we living in such desperate times that people are more interested in finding out how much money Paris Hilton will be paid for her first interview after she is released from jail! Does this justify the fact that no TV or radio station provided coverage for the 5K run? I sure hope not. Please help bring AIDS back to the forefront by showing you care, so maybe next year when this race as well as other races benefiting AIDS charities are held again, at least one radio or TV station will cover AIDS related running events. I promise to announce a 2007 World AIDS Marathon to be held on World AIDS Day, and related events as soon as the foundation has $10,000 as shown in the active.com account, http://www.worldaidsmarathon.com/ and then click the 'donate' link. This money needs to be received by mid-September or the proceeds will be held for a 2008 World AIDS Marathon. Either way the foundation is committed to a $1,000 donation so as many orphans can be fed in Kisumu as possible as part of the 2007 World AIDS Day events.
