Group Calls on Kenyan Government To Stop Taxing Imported Goods

Intended for People Living With HIV/AIDS

[Dec 19, 2007]

The Action for Empowerment Organization on Sunday appealed to the

Kenyan government to exempt taxes on goods imported into the country

for HIV-positive people, Kenya's Daily Nation reports.

Sam Tushabe, international coordinator for the faith-based group,

during a speech to launch the group's Kenya office criticized the

government for taxing food, medication and clothes that have been

donated and imported into the country for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Tushabe said the government should not tax the goods because they are

intended to help people living with the disease.

Tushabe during his speech also said his group aims to empower children

and their guardians and called on the Kenyan government to protect

children from violence, the Daily Nation reports (Daily Nation, 12/17).
