Guest guest
Details of the Children at Jambo Jipya and their Backgrounds All of the parents of the children in Jambo Jipya are HIV Positive. This is due to the crisis that is crippling Kenya, and thee children are it's innocent victims. Every 6 months all of these children are tested for HIV and there are currently 4 children in the school who are HIV positive. They receive retroviral medication at the school. However , we expect number to increase every time they are tested, especially among the younger children in KG. All of the children at Jambo Jipya have their own individual stories. The following is the breakdown for the number of children who share similar difficult home situations: * 80 Children have parents who are sex workers, the majority of whom have contracted HIV from this and so this is often transmitted to their children. Their fathers are unknown and these single mothers and unable to look after their children. * 50 of the children en at Jambo Jipya are Orphans and Living with aunts, grandparents, neighbours or other guardian who barely have enough food for their own children. These Children can suffer from abuse from their foster family. * 20 of the Children here have lost either their mother or father. On their own, the remaining parent cannot afford to buy a uniform and copybooks necessary for their sons and daughters to attend government primary school. The guardians and parents of the children of Jambo Jipya cannot contribute to any costs, so the school provides uniforms , school books ,copybooks and pencils, two meals every day and any necessary medication for each and every child without asking for anything in return. also meets all of the mothers every half-term in order to educate them about family planning, AIDS and how best care for their children. Many of these young mothers have not gone to school themselves. Our vision Our Vision is for Jambo Jipya to continue to provide a safe environment for children to live and learn, where they can achieve a better future for themselves and be in a position to help and guide the future children of Jambo Jipya when they are grown up. Vision for the immediate future (0-1 Year) By next year, we would like Jambo Jipya to have 2 more classrooms and more 50 more children who need the education, food and support that we can provide. We would like every child to have their own schoolbooks and more desks as at the moment some of the children have to sit on the floor or three to a seat.We also need to try and get beds and new matresses and bed sheets for the 30 children who live at the school, as well as the continous running costs of the school (food, medication, rent and staff salaries) to be covered throughtout the year. Vision for the next 1-5 years: In 5 years time (2012), we want Jambo Jipya to have its own plot of land. This will give Jambo Jambo Jipya a long-term security and also space to build a house where all all the children who don't have safe and loving homes can leave. We also look forward to establishing a Jambo Jipya secondary school in order to educate our children. We hope to also provide ;in this secondary school;Food, uniforms and other neccessary support for it to thrive. Vision for the next 5-10 Years: In 10 years time (2017), we want Jambo Jipya to be a thriving community of up to 1000 children who have been given a better chance in life. All of our children will be encouraged and helped to become whatever they want to be and have the career and life they enjoy and deserve. We see the children of Jambo Jipya becoming good citizens; people that will help each other and people in need like they have helped. Long-Term Vision (10+ years): We see Jambo Jipya continuing beyond and even beyond any of the young children now going to school. Throughout, Jambo Jipya will always be a place where children are treated with Dignity , Love and Compasion, just as it has been the first time that reached out and helped those three children who had nobody to care for them What Made Decide to set up Jambo Medical Project? Mwende is a local Nurse Living in Mtwapa with her three children. In 1999, she became aware of a nearby family of 3 young children whose both parents had recently died of AIDS. These children had no where to go and no one to look after and so took it upon herself to buy them food and also pay for them to go to the local primary school. Through word of mouth, local families in need heard about and how she was helping these children. More and more people came to ask for help and , seeing their desperate situation she could not refuse. By 2001 , was helping 40 families, Most of which who had parents dying of AIDS, Vulnerable young children in need of her medical help, Support and compassion. In September 2001, she registered Jambo Jipya Medical Project with the Department of Social Services as Non-Profit Making Organization (CBO) No. SS/KFI/SHG/KIK-D/112/2001. During this period, was working the night-Shift at the local Hospital from 6pm-6am, and giving Home-Based care ( Cooking Food / Washing the sick /giving advice and medication and also paying to send their children to the local school where necessary) to 40 families in need during the day. She often had to walk distances up to 8 Kilometres between houses. For 6 years she worked the most part of 24 hours a day to help those who couldn't look after themselves or their children. In 2004 , established Jambo Jipya Community School. She came to this decision because it was too difficult for her to keep an eye on the children that she had placed in various local primary schools. It was common for these children not to make it to school some days because they found it too difficult to walk up to 4 Kilometres on an empty stomach or when they were sick , so moved 30 Children aged between 21/2 and 13 years into a two-roomed mud hut and employed a teacher. Initially the school had no school supplies or desks at all , but the children received breakfast and dinner everyday, and were looked after when they were sick. Gradually she was able to save enough money from working night shift at a hospital to buy books, blackboards and uniforms for the children. Through word of mouth, the number of children at Jambo Jipya school increased to 150 by August 2007. There are currently 7 classes, including KG 1,KG3,( With Children aged 21/2 -6) standard 1,2,3 and 4, (with children ranging in age from 7-16) with standard 5 being added in January 2008. The school has also increased to 6 cement classrooms, an office and a staff room , and in march 2007, 30 children began sleeping overnight on a mattresses in the staffroom. In 2006, could no longer work at the hospital she was needed at the school too much and she couldn't keep up all day and all night continuously. She still treats people in the community during the day, but as a result she has lost a major source of income and so is always struggling to cover the cost of running Jambo Jipya , and currently depends on continued help from friends. Jambo Jipya Centre school was established in March 2004 as an offshoot of Jambo Jipya Medical Project. The school was set up in response to the escalating number of children in and around Mombasa affected directly and indirectly by the AIDS crisis in Kenya. These include Children who have lost one or both parents to AIDS and also children who have been subjected to abuse, 30 of whom are living in the school Without Continued financial and personal support, this amazing project will be unable to continue to provide the educational and personal needs of the 150 children who currently go to school.Jambo Jipya also wants to continue to expand and buy land upon which to build a school to ultimately accomodate and give hope to 1000 children in need of a safe heaven.
