African media unite against HIV/Aids

African media have grouped together to launch an Aids initiative to

fight the pandemic

November 29, 2006, 08:15

In commemoration of World Aids Day, December 1, the African Broadcast

Media Partnership against HIV/Aids (ABMP) will launch the first

coordinated Pan African Media Initiative on HIV/Aids, under the

theme " an HIV free generation, it begins with you " .

This partnership is an unprecedented coalition of 41 public and

commercial radio and TV broadcast companies across 25 African

countries.

Solly Mokoetle, SABC's chief operating officer and steering committee

chairperson of ABMP, says this initiative is an offshoot of the

Global Media Aids Initiative which was started by Kofi n, the UN

secretary-general, where he called on all electronic media to deal

with the pandemic.

Own resources

" We further took the initiative in Africa and established a coalition

of African broadcast media as Africans in order to look at our own

resources to help the African continent in combating this pandemic, "

Mokoetle says. He further emphasised the need for united

resources " as this is bigger than all of us " .

The initiative is also intended to take a look at different

organisations. " We need to prioritise the issue of HIV/Aids in our

business and communication strategies, " he says.

The message of hope to live in an HIV/Aids free generation will be

broadcast across all broadcasters at the same time across the

continent. In South Africa, the message will be televised at 3pm on

Friday on SABC, e.tv and Multichoice. - edited by Nthabeleng Thipa
