who supported the Boston 2006 conference on AIDS orphans. The conference was a great success because of you. It was rewarding to meet so many natives and American friends who are involved in community-based care for AIDS orphans from Malawi to Uganda. It was clear from the presentations and deliberations that out of the billions that are being heralded now and then, very little is trickling to the poor needy children in the villages. Most of the dollars disappear in the middle and some painfully come back to the source with sophisticated explanations. The conference also noted how difficult it is to put HIV positive children into ARVs and more so those in the rural areas. It was also observed how the meager rural economy is in jeopardy as the middle aged people die and the terminally sick moves from the city with their children back to the villages for family and community support. AIDS is more of a rural nighmare than the urban. Grandmothers who thought that they were thru with children are back to parenting with no resources and energy. ABC

strategy needs evaluation in the rural context. It was obvious from the conference participants that AIDS is devastating the society the same way it does to the body and if no meaningful intervention is put in place for Orphans, the family/community fabric will be damaged beyond repair especially as death peaks up in 2010 As was suggested by many, there is a need to form a consortium of US-Based organizations that are working with the Grassroot CBOs in sub-Saharan Africa to compare notes, advocate for strategies that resuscitates African coping mechanisms and push for strengthening the extended family system to absorb AIDS orphans and vulnerable children African Health Foundation is taking a lead in developing directory of US-based organizations with programs in the grassroot( Africa) that would like to form a consortium to push for changes in program delivery and policies. If your organization is willing to be apart of this development, send us your contacts so that we can keep you posted. Again, thank you all for making the Boston 2006 Conference on AIDS a success. Soon you will get the detailed conference proceedings from AHF secretary, Dr.
