African Union

INVITATION TO THE AU PRE-SUMMIT WOMEN'S FORUM

22-23 JUNE 2006, BANJUL, GAMBIA.

I have the honour to invite you to the African Union Women's Forum

which is being organized by the Women Gender and Development

Directorate of the African Union, in partnership with African Centre

for Democracy and Human Rights Studies and ISIS Women International

Cross Cultural Exchange, from 22 to 23 June 2006 in Banjul, Gambia.

You will recall that in their Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality

in Africa, African Heads of State and Government, in operative

paragraphs 2 and 3, committed themselves to ensure the full

participation and representation of women in peace processes

including the prevention, resolution, and management of conflict and

in post-conflict reconstruction in Africa. They also committed

themselves to take action to prohibit the recruitment of child

soldiers and the abuse of girl children.

The Women's Forum, which is organised within the ambit of the

Summit, has the theme " Promoting Gender-Responsive Governance in

Countries Emerging from Conflict " . The Forum will therefore focus on

issues of gender and governance in countries emerging from armed

conflict and propose strategies to reduce the impact of conflict on

women, including gender-based violence and lay the foundations for

gender-sensitive and women-inclusive governance.

Participants at the Women's Forum are drawn from civil society

organizations, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), AU Organs, the

African Development Bank (ADB), UN Agencies, the Media and other

development partners.

Kindly confirm your participation as soon as possible to the address

below:
