Guest guest
June 1, 2002 From June 1, 1990 until June 1, 2002, six million Americans died from cancer. They were not told about PSK/Krestin & PSP, extracts from the Coriolus versicolor mushroom. In 1989, the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) highly praised and virtually endorsed these extracts as anti-cancer agents. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned their importation from Japan. Rose Ann Antich, State Senator, Merrillville, Indiana 46410 Greg , M.D., Director, Indiana State Health Department, 2 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN 46204 I have posted this letter to the Internet in the hope that it might benefit someone, somewhere. Senator Antich and Dr. , the fate of cancer victims throughout the United States might depend upon what course of action you decide to take! Dear Senator Antich and Dr. , After reading this letter, I hope you will direct some questions to the Directors of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI). The Director of the FDA should be asked: " Why aren't Americans being told about the anti-cancer mushroom extracts PSK/Krestin & PSP, and why can't these extracts be imported from Japan? " Senator Antich and Dr. , let me afford you a little bit of my research history relative to PSK/Krestin and PSP. On January 25, 2001, I became aware of these passages in ADVANCES IN APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY, 'Antitumor and Antiviral Substances from Fungi', VOLUME 34, Academic Press, Inc., 1989, pages 183 to 262 (All bold face emphasis in this letter is mine.): Page 183: " The United States National Cancer Institute (NCI) has recently intensified its emphasis upon natural products as a source of new drug discovery. The initial impetus for these efforts stemmed both from the abundant precedents for the discovery of a wide variety of valuable medicinal agents across essentially all pharmaceutical classes and from a comprehensive restructuring and expansion of scope of the NCI drug-screening programs.... " Page 236: " Antitumor polysaccharides have been obtained from a number of Basidiomycetes including Coriolus consors, Coriolus versicolor.... " Page 237: " ....The polysaccharide-protein complex has been found to be effective in the treatment of solid types of Ehrlich carcinoma or sarcoma 180 cancerous tumors in mice. The effective substance exhibits neither cytotoxicity nor side effects commonly seen in connection with the use of conventional anticancer agents, such as decrease in the number of leucocytes, anemia of the liver and other organs, atrophy of the spleen, loss of body weight, and loss of appetite. " Page 238: " The polysaccharide PS-K (j.s.r. - PSK) has been extracted by Hirase et al. (1970) from Coriolus versicolor. It is found to be effective against sarcoma 180 when administered orally. PS-K is a B-(1,4)-glucan containing 10% protein. Its water solubility and effectiveness with oral administration seems to be due to its protein-containing structure (Hata, 1977).... " Page 238: " ...Polysaccaropeptide (j.s.r. - PSP) produced by C. versicolor has a wide range of antitumor activities, inhibiting Ehrlich ascites tumors, leukemia P388, and sarcoma 180, and the growth of cells of gastric tumor, lymph, and monocytic leukemia (Yang et al., 1987).... " Page 238: " ....Both United States patents 4,271,151 and 4,289,688 issued to Hotta et al. (1981a, relate to protein-bound polysaccharides which have excellent antitumor activity not only by intraperitoneal administration but also by oral administration.... " Page 238: " ....The polysaccharides (j.s.r. - PSK & PSP) have been contemplated for use against a wide variety of mammalian cancers, including mammary cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, such as those of the esophagus, stomach and large colon; lung cancer and brain tumors.... " On January 28, I found this information on the Internet, 'PSK, A Non-Toxic Natural Cancer Treatment' (Site no longer available - http://www.wellweb.com/ALTERN/cancer/psk/contents.htm): " PSK is an all-natural mushroom extract made from the mushroom Coriolus versicolor. " " PSK has been available in Japan for more that 15 years, where it has government approval to be used for a number of cancers. PSK is also covered by Japanese health insurance. Based solely on Japanese sales, PSK is the number-one selling anti-cancer agent in the world. " " There have been nearly four hundred scientific studies done on the safety and effectiveness of PSK. Some show increased survival rates and improved quality of life without toxic side effect. " " In the US, PSK is little known and not readily available. In Japan it is one of the most used therapeutic substances. There are a large number of studies about PSK that tend to prove certain benefits. PSK is a polysaccharide complex with the potential to enhance and stimulate the immune system. PSK is derived from a fungus, an edible mushroom called Coriolus Versicolor. In some Western cultures it is nicknamed 'Turkey Tail'. " " A common problem with nutritional supplements is that many are not readily 'bioavailable', i.e. in a form that the body can absorb them. PSK can be taken orally and and is readily absorbed. Relative to most alternative therapies, research and studies of PSK as an anti-cancer agent are abundant and largely positive, and show a moderate response primarily when used as adjuvant therapy in combination with certain conventional treatments. Since PSK is virtually free of side effects, aside from the cost, there may be little if any downside to using it in situations supported by well designed studies -- again in conjunction with, not instead of conventional therapies for which there is evidence of efficacy. " (Author's emphasis) In the article, Sheim, Ph.D., a retired researcher from the National Cancer Institute, stated: " It is noteworthy that a non-toxic Japanese drug, PSK, containing complex polysaccharide ingredients derived from a fungus, has demonstrated significant anticancer activity comparable to those of standard anticancer drugs in several large randomized clinical trials. PSK is administered orally in these studies at a typical dosage of 3 grams daily. For example, PSK plus radiation yielded 22% 5-year survival for stage III non-small cell lung cancer v. 5% 5-year survival for those patients receiving radiation alone, a statistically significant difference. " " In addition, PSK as an oral adjuvant treatment following curative surgery for colon cancer was found to yield 30% 8-year disease free survival v. 10% for patients taking placebo, a statistically significant difference, in a randomized, double-blind clinical trial. PSK was found to sharply increase the motility and phagocytic activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, which the investigators found significant based upon other findings that prognosis of cancer patients was positively correlated with the degree of cellular infiltration around tumor sites. PSK was also found to yield significant activity and prolongation of survival when administered to nude mice implanted with human ovarian cell line xenografts. " Now, I found all of this information very interesting, but it did not overwhelm me. Several months later, on August 4, I was overwhelmed when I read this passage in THE CANCER INDUSTRY, by Ralph Moss, Ph.D., page 91: " In fact, the best-selling cancer drug worldwide is Krestin (j.s.r. - PSK), an immunostimulant produced by Kureha and marketed by Sankyo, both Japanese companies. With 1987 sales of $359.1 million, Krestin is in fact the nineteenth top-selling drug in the world (Health Week, 3/3/87). Yet the drug is not available in the United States. Company officials indicated that Krestin was not being marketed in the United States in part because of difficulty of obtaining FDA approval. " On August 20, I found this information on the Internet, 'the Magic of Medicinal Mushrooms' (Site no longer available, http://www.alternativemedicine.com/digest/issue36/36046.shtml_old): " Coriolus....More recently clinical trials have proven it effective for cancer patients because of its anti-tumor action and ability to stimulate the immune system.... " " Coriolus is the top-selling nutritional product in Japan today and the number one selling medicinal mushroom product in the world for cancer treatment (over $600 million annually in Japan, Europe and North America). This is the only mushroom to have gone through double-blind clinical trials in humans. Tested both singly and in combination with conventional therapies, it doubled or tripled survival rates and immune function. In Japan, the extract known as PSK or Krestin, is the top cancer medicine. It even combats the disabling side effects of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and compromised cellular immunity attributed to conventional cancer drugs. Studies following patients' post colon cancer surgery showed that survival rates doubled when patients were given Coriolus extract; survival rates also improved for patients with non-small cell lung cancer who were treated with radiation. Other clinical studies showed that Coriolus enhanced cytotoxicity (cancer-killing ability) by 500% within seven days, especially for sarcoma, increasing the numbers and effectiveness of immune cells while also augmenting resistence to bacterial infection. " In August, I began to, and have continued to, alert Officials in the Washington, D.C., area to these findings. Here is more data that I discovered after August; access the National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) and type in the word combination psk psp; here are the salient passage from 4 of the 6 abstracts that will appear: 1. Ooi VE, Liu F. " ....Three antitumor mushroom polysaccharides, i.e. lentinan, schizophyllan and protein-bound polysaccharide (PSK, Krestin), isolated respectively, from Lentinus edodes, Schizophyllum commune and Coriolus versicolor, have become large market items in Japan. Lentinan and schizophyllan are pure beta-glucans, whereas PSK is a protein-bound beta-glucan. A polysaccharide peptide (PSP), isolated from a strain of Coriolus versicolor in China, has also been widely used as an anti-cancer and immunomodulatory agent. Although the mechanism of their antitumor action is still not completely clear, these polysaccharides and polysaccharide-protein complexes are suggested to enhance cell-mediated immune responses in vivo and in vitro and act as biological response modifiers.... " 2. Kidd PM. " ....Two proteoglycans from Coriolus versicolor - PSK (Polysaccharide K) and PSP (Polysaccharide-Peptide) - have demonstrated the most promise. In Japanese trials since 1970, PSK significantly extended survival at five years and beyond in cancers of the stomach, colon-rectum, esophagus, nasopharynx, and lung (non-small cell types), and in a HLA B40-positive breast cancer subset. PSP significantly extended five-year survival in esophageal cancer. PSP significantly improved quality of life, provided substantial pain relief, and enhanced immune status in 70-97 percent of patients with cancers of the stomach, esophagus, lung, ovary, and cervix. PSK and PSP boosted immune cell production, ameliorated chemotherapy symptoms, and enhanced tumor infiltration by dendritic and cytotoxic T-cells. Their extremely high tolerability, proven benefits to survival and quality of life, and compatibility with chemotherapy and radiation therapy makes them well suited for cancer management regimens. " 3. Ng TB. " ....PSP administered to patients with esophageal cancer, gastric cancer and lung cancer, and who are undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy, helps alleviate symptoms and prevents the decline in immune status. " 6. Yang MM, Chen Z, Kwok JS. Contains this passage relative to PSP - " ....and was named small peptide of Coriolus versicolor, SPCV. It was found that SPCV possesses potent cytotoxic effect on human tumor cell lines of HL-60, LS 174-T, SMMU-7721, and SCG-7901.... " IN MEDLINE, THERE IS NO CITATION UNDER A 'CANCER' SUBJECT HEADING FOR THE 1989 RESEARCH (SEE ABOVE - 'ANTITUMOR AND ANTIVIRAL SUBSTANCES FROM FUNGI') PUBLISHED BY THE U.S. NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE (NCI). DID SOMEONE AT THE NCI WANT TO CONCEAL THESE FINDINGS? ARE CERTAIN FACTIONS WITHIN THE NCI CORRUPT? More research can be found in MEDLINE and the Internet relative to the benefit of using PSK and PSP as adjuvant therapy in the treatment of cancer. Let me quote one more source; it was written by 8 Japanese Doctors who, in 1997, were associated with the Department of Radiology and Radiation Oncology, Gunma University School of Medicine, Maebashi, Gunma, Japan and can be found at http://www.cancerprev.org/Journal/Issues/21/1/172: ABSTRACT: To evaluate the efficacy of Krestin (PSK) as adjuvant treatment after radical radiation therapy (RT) for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), treatment results of 225 patients with NSCLC treated with RT followed by adjuvant administration of PSK between 1976 and 1989 were analyzed. Of these patients, 170 (76%) had squamous cell carcinoma. In the patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, PSK was given only when the tumor showed satisfactory shrinkage (complete or partial response) after completion of RT. The treatment outcomes were compared with those of the responders to RT not receiving PSK. The 5-year survival rates of patients with stages I-II and stage III disease were 39 and 26%, respectively, while the non-administered responder group's were 17 and 8%. These differences are statistically significant. An improvement in the treatment results with combined use of appropriate immuno-modulating drugs is anticipated in the future. When clinical trials of the efficacy of thse drugs are conducted, the agents should be given to the patients with satisfactory tumor regression after RT, although they still take much time and cost. " Since August, 2001, I have mailed numerous letters to Representative J. Visclosky and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) about this important health matter. This was Representative Visclosky's response as it appeared in the March 11, 2002 edition of 'The TIMES' (Northwest Indiana): " A spokesman for Visclosky said this sort of thing is something that gets passed along to proper authorities, like the National Institute of Health. " No one from the NIH or NCI has ever responded to me about this matter. As the matter now stands, I definitely think there are certain factions within the NIH and NCI that are corrupt! On September 7, 2001, I wrote a letter to Representative Visclosky that contains this headline - Congressman Visclosky, on my behalf, would you please make sure that the FDA responds to my letter. The letter contained the anti-cancer information about PSK and PSP that I have highlighted in this letter. I have continued to mail letters about this health issue to Representative Visclosky and the FDA and others (see below - 'Copies to - '). No response yet from Representative Visclosky or the FDA. Are certain factions within the FDA also corrupt? Senator Antich and Dr. , let me repeat - The fate of cancer victims throughout the United States might depend upon what course of action you decide to take! Let's imagine this scenario - The PSK & PSP report was published by the NCI in 1989. Let's assume it would have taken 5 months to alert all the medical community of the U.S.A. to the potential usefulness of these mushroom extracts as adjuvant therapy in the treatment of various forms of cancer. Correct me if I am wrong, but the figure I most often see for the yearly cancer deaths in the U.S.A. is 500,000. Then, from June 1, 1990, to June 1, 2002, 6 million (500,000 x 12) cancer victims could have been told about the potential benefit of using PSK & PSP as adjuvant therapy in their treatment. The sad fact is - 6 million cancer victims living in the United States of America were not told! Senator Antich and Dr. , I hope you ask the Director of the National Cancer Institute this question - Why aren't Americans being told about the anti-cancer potential of Lentinan, an extract from the Shiitake mushroom? I assume that the American Type Culture Collection has a close working relationship with the National Cancer Institute. This information about Lentinan was published in 1993 by researchers, Shung-Chang Jong and J.M. Birmingham, associated with the American Type Culture Collection; refer to ADVANCES IS APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY, VOLUME 39, Academic Press, pages 153 to 184, 'Medicinal and Therapeutic Value of the Shiitake Mushroom': Page 154: " ....Reputed antitumor components vary in chemical nature, but the most important may prove to be a polysaccharide that acts as a host defense potentiator (Jong et al., 1991). Page 157: " Lentinan is a B-glucan (Hamuro et al., 1976).... " Page 157: " The anti-tumor fraction of lentinan is of high molecular weight (T. Sasaki et al., 1976).... " Page 158: " Lentinan appears to be a potent host defense potentiator which improves homeostasis of the host against cancer or infection (Chihara et al., 1989). " Page 159: " Maeda and Chihara (1973a) found that lentinan activated the anti-tumor effect of peritoneal-exudate in rats against sarcoma 180 in vivo.... " Page 163: " Miyakoshi and co-workers (1984) indicate that lentinan can inhibit cancer in humans.... " Page 164: " a. Combination with Other Therapeutic Agents. Badger (1984) showed that lentinan in combination with chemotherapy increased survival 50% when compared to chemotherapy alone.... " Pages 176-177: " Lentinan first extracted from the fruiting body of L. edodes is a pure B-1, 3-glucan containing only glucose. It appears to act as a host-defense potentiator which can improve the physiological constitution of the host against cancer, as well as various kinds of infections, and restore or augment the ability of responsiveness of the host to bioactive substances, such as lymphokines or cytokines.... " Page 177: " ....Remarkable life span prolongation has been achieved in patients with advanced and recurrent stomach, colorectal and breast cancer. Lentinan is commercially available for clinical use. In 1987 it was the eighth top-selling anti-cancer drug in Japan with 2.2% share of the market valued at $3 million (Fukushima, 1989). " Page 177: " The use of cultivated edible mushrooms, such as L.edodes, as a source of biologically active principles offers obvious advantages. Edibility increases the likelihood of a safe, tolerated principle, while cultivability assures an adequate supply. However, cultivation of the mushroom need not be a limitation when active principles can be derived from its mycelial cultures, as in the case with LEM. " Page 177: The biologically active components isolated and identified in edible fungi show great promise and should be further exploited for their therapeutic effects, either as dietary components or as purified drugs. The cure for the diseases that plague mankind, particularly cancer and AIDS, may lie with the biochemistry of edible mushrooms. Senator Antich and Dr. , I hope you ask the Director of the National Cancer Institute this question - What is the U.S. National Cancer Institute's (NCI) current evaluation of TAC (Thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid), an anti-cancer extract from the Shiitake mushroom? Representative J. Visclosky and Ms. Dorothy A. Foellmer of the NCI did not have the courtesy to afford me a copy of the letters in which these passages appear. If it had not been for the fact that a Schererville, Indiana citizen mailed to me a copy of the letters, I would have never known of their existence! This passage appears in a May 16, 2001 letter sent by Rep. Visclosky to the Schererville citizen: " Several years ago my office contacted the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to inquire about S. ' cancer cure proposal (j.s.r. - It contains TAC). The response we received from the National Cancer Institute indicated that Mr. ' cure would have negative effects on patients, and was not a safe cure for any cancer. To ensure that there has not been any change in the status of Mr. ' proposal, I have taken the liberty of forwarding your correspondence to me to Tommy , the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Enclosed please find a copy of my letter to Secretary , asking that he address your concerns. " On behalf of Secretary , Ms. Foellmer (Director, Office of Legislation and Congressional Activities - NCI) wrote a June 28, 2001 letter to that same Schererville citizen; this passage appears: " In your letter to Mr. Visclosky, you expressed an interest in the work of Mr. S. . Mr. has made claims on the internet that a compound, Thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (TAC), can cure cancer. Since 1955, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has actively evaluated materials that might be useful in the discovery of new agents for cancer treatment through the Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP). Extensive testing of TAC was conducted in 1979 by DTP. No anti-tumor activity was found and the testing was stopped. As part of the drug discovery process, DTP receives agents from many sources, including universities, research institutes, government agencies, biotechnology companies, and pharmaceutical houses. The testing done on TAC was initiated because of reports from a human trial that was done in Spain. The compound was tested on numerous animal tumor models, but failed to show any anti-tumor activity. " Apparently, Ms. Foellmer was unaware of the cancer research of two of the world's foremost doctors - Dr. V. Schally, a 1977 Nobel Prize winner in Medicine, and Dr. Gosalvez, who was for 30 years the Director of Biochemcial Research for the Kingdom of Spain. TAC is an integral component in the cancer research of Dr. Schally and Dr. Gosalvez. From 1994 to 2000, Dr. Schally published 13 reports in which he said that compounds containing TAC might be effective in causing the " inhibition of growth " of these Cancers - Pancreatic, Prostate, Renal (Kidney), Breast, Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (SCLC), Glioblastoma (Brain tumor) and Ovary. Dr. Schally's final refinement containing TAC, compound RC-3940-II, was patented by Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana. These passages are found in a July 20, 2001 letter to S. from Dr. Gosalvez: " In 1981, we found unfortunately that Thiazolidine Carboxylic Acid - alone - can not cure cancer because it only reverses to normality the benign and less malign cancer cells. The malignant cancer cells are not reversible to normality by Thioproline. In 1989 we finished the development of the technique of 'Cancer Reversal by Dual Strategy', the combination of Thiazolidine Carboxylic Acid with Quelamycin, our transient ferric complex of the cytotoxic agent Adriamycin. Quelamycin kills specifically the malignant cancer cells that are not reverted to normality by Thioproline (j.s.r. - TAC). " " Due to the general lack of interest in our technique for Reversal of Cancer by Dual Strategey we reached, in 1989, - through very important indirect ways - (j.s.r. - King and Queen Sofia of Spain and former President Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush) - the top military authorities of the United States of America with the request of a pilot clinical trial by the Military Hospitals of United States of the combination of Thioproline and Quelamycin in terminal cancer patients. I am firmly convinced that this trial was conducted successfully and that then the American military implemented a massive study of the technique of Cancer Reversal by Dual Strategy that endured the last ten years. I think that their results will be soon communicated to the American people and to the World by the top American leader.... " Thus the question remains - Is TAC an effective anti-cancer agent? Dr. Schally and Dr. Gosalvez think it is; however, Ms. Foellmer thinks it is not. Senator Antich and Dr. , here again are the three primary questions that I hope you ask of Federal Officials - 1. Director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Why aren't Americans being told about the anti-cancer mushroom extracts PSK/Krestin & PSP, and why can't these extracts be imported from Japan? 2. Director of the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI): Why aren't Americans being told about the anti-cancer potential of Lentinan, an extract from the Shiitake mushroom? 3. Director of the NCI: What is the NCI's current evaluation of TAC (Thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid), an anti-cancer extract from the Shiitake mushroom? (MEDLINE, 6599915, states that TAC contains " anti-cancer molecules " .) Senator Antich and Dr. , thank you for giving this matter your time and attention. The fate of Cancer victims throughout the world might depend upon you. Sincerely, S. , 5086 Sunrise Ave., Portage, Indiana 46368, (219) 763-1933 Post Script - A.
