Guest guest
ALLIANCE FOR HUMAN RESEARCH PROTECTION (AHRP) http://www.ahrp.org December 2003 The Alliance for Human Research Protection (AHRP) has been documenting and disseminating information about medical ethics issues. In particular, AHRP serves as a watchdog organization, monitoring the conduct of clinical research, false claims about the findings, and concealment of serious adverse effects. As academic medicine and government research have come under the ubiquitous influence of the pharmaceutical industry, vulnerable populations are increasingly sought as human test subjects in experiments that put them at unjustifiable risk. In particular, children, disabled people, the elderly and military personnel are at increased risk of exploitation. Major news outlets tend to neglect or downplay institutional medical ethics violations. For one thing, criticism of the biomedical industry conflicts with income from advertisers. AHRP is a uniquely independent voice of conscience, sounding public alerts about unethical human experiments wherever they occur. Complaints filed by AHRP and the organization's leadership have led to: federal investigations; the suspension of a smallpox vaccine trial that would have exposed 2 to 5 year old children to the hazards of the vaccine; the suspension of 29 clinical trials at the National Institute of Mental Health; the suspension of a fenfluramine experiment on African-American boys, and much more. AHRP Infomails are distributed electronically, free of charge, as a public service. Infomails reach thousands of concerned people--among them, healthcare professionals, public officials, academics, the press, as well as consumer and other non-governmental organizations worldwide. AHRP's user-friendly website (www.ahrp.org) contains a wealth of information useful to journalists, professionals, students and laypersons. We would like to continue to provide this service free. But to do so we need your help and support--as we do not receive funding from either industry or government. You can help by making a tax-deductible contribution in any amount you can afford. AHRP is a tax-exempt, 501C-3 organization (EIN 13-4192842) so your contributions are tax deductible.
