" ... as safe as the US made vaccine. " Bloody cheek! ;-) ============ From Reuters, http://dailynews./h/nm/20011102/sc/attack_anthrax_vaccine_dc_5.html - Friday November 2 6:08 PM ET U.S. Seeks British, Russian anthrax Vaccine Slideshows AP Photo Tracking anthrax WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. officials are making efforts to acquire doses of British- or Russian-made anthrax vaccines to help protect against the biological weapon, Health and Human Services (news - web sites) Secretary Tommy said on Friday. The only U.S. maker, Bioport Corp., is waiting for Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites) clearance to ship its vaccine. , speaking to reporters during a telephone briefing, said Bioport had 5.4 million doses ready to go if the FDA gives approval. Asked whether he was trying to obtain additional supplies from English or Russian vaccine makers, said ``yes.'' He said the manufacturers had not done tests to determine whether the foreign-made vaccines were as safe as the U.S. immunizations ``and that's one of the problems.'' Officials have encouraged offshore manufacturers to present safety data to the FDA as soon as possible, said Lillibridge, one of 's top bioterrorism advisers. ``Arrangements have been made for several people to provide such information and that's in progress,'' Lillibridge said. The British vaccine has some side effects, and the Russian one is made with live anthrax bacteria and deemed unsafe for human use by the U.S. government, scientists have said. Most of the Bioport vaccines are under the control of the Pentagon (news - web sites) for vaccinating U.S. troops that might be targets of biological weapons on the battlefield. Officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites) also want to have the vaccine available for decontamination personnel and state and private laboratory workers who might be exposed to anthrax bacteria. Bioport is based in Lansing, Michigan.
