Vaccine Manufacturer Nixes Meeting

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The only U.S. manufacturer of an anthrax vaccine

canceled a public meeting Wednesday, saying instead it would answer

questions about safety in writing.

Many residents are uneasy because Michigan National Guard troops are

guarding the laboratory. But company spokeswoman Kim Brennen Root said there

have been no specific threats.

BioPort keeps some live anthrax bacteria on its property, but the company

has said it isn't in a form that would be of use to terrorists.

In the three years since BioPort bought the lab from the state, it has not

shipped a single dose of anthrax vaccine because it has been unable to get

Food and Drug Administration approval.

BioPort on Monday plans to submit new information showing it has made the

changes necessary to be allowed to ship the vaccine.

Anthrax produces a toxin that can cause fatal damage to the respiratory

system and brain. A Florida man died Friday of inhaled anthrax, a rare and

particularly lethal form of the disease.
